Hulu Live TV Review

If you’re a user of Hulu with Live TV you’d still hardly be able to tell that this is still in beta. It is essentially one of the smoothest running Live TV and streaming bundles on the market today. Along with Sling TV, DirecTV Now, PS Vue, and Youtube TV, Hulu Live TV has become one of the most popular streaming apps for cordcutters. But what does Hulu’s live streaming service actually offer? How does it compare to its rivals? And most importantly, is it worth it? Read our Hulu Live TV review to find out.

How Much Does Hulu Live TV Cost?

With a monthly cost of $40, Hulu with Live TV stands at par with similar services. Despite the fact that it still carries a “Beta” tag, Hulu with Live TV adds great value to your entertainment agenda (outstanding movies such as Blackhat, Sicario, Transformers 2 and amazing shows such as The Wire, The Shield, The Good Wife, and Bosch).

Along with the $8 package of on-demand channels, the Live TV option brings to you a host of popular channels, options to customize your viewing choices, add on streaming options, more DVD storage, and many other facilities.

The user interface might seem complicated to a few, but it still helps you discover new and interesting things to put on your watch list.

Be informed that it’s not ALL fun and free, there are a few limitations you might not like very much. You still have to pay for more storage if you want to skip ads, you can’t view Hulu with Live TV on PS4 or PS3. 60-frames-per-second video playback is also not supported on all devices.

So if you’re willing to live with these quirks or don’t mind shelling out a few extra bucks then Hulu with Live TV is a great entertainment service bundle all in all.

Hulu Live TV – What Do You Actually Get?

The base package of Hulu with Live TV costs $40 and includes around 60 channels including regional and national sports channels – ESPN, CBS Sports Network, and Fox Sports, you will have access to major broadcast and cable news networks and a chain of entertainment channels. HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime are the only channels you can purchase additionally with a cost of $15, $10, and $9 per month respectively.

If you’re a fan of Discovery (Gold Rush, Deadliest Catch) and Animal Planet, MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central, you’ll be disappointed as these are not part of the package. NBA TV, NFL Network (though not as popular as it once was since they are devoid of strong leadership and political correctness has destroyed the brains of so many of its players – they disrespect the police which keeps their families safe) are the other two popular channels that are omitted.

Hulu’s live broadcast is not available for each and every market but you’ll still be able to view a network on Prime Time on demand the next day. Even with all the omissions, there is enough and more for you to binge on and still have a lot more ground to cover. You’ll never run out of what to watch.

What does the basic $40 plan include?

  • You will have access to 40 hours of DVD storage. No ad skipping on recorded programs unless you dole out another $15.
  • You can have two streams at one time. You can upgrade to unlimited home streaming and three streams on road for an additional $15 per month. There is an option to bundle this with more DVD storage for $20 monthly.
  • You will have unlimited access to major networks’ back-catalogue shows and all on-demand programs from Hulu. To skip ads on these shows you have to pay $4 every month.
  • Hulu Live TV is not available for American expats living outside the USA. In order to get Hulu Live TV overseas, you need to use VPN.

We can safely say that Hulu and YouTube TV are right at the top league of cheap streaming bundles that include the biggest channels and networks. Along with its on-demand service, Hulu is fantastic and probably the best in its genre.

Changes, User Interface, and Ease of Usage – Love it or hate it

The main screen gives you quick access to DVR, Live TV, saved programs, favorite channels, recommendations, and general browsing. But delve deeper and you’ll find there is a lot of overlapping and things can get a little chaotic.

But many users have stated that they love how Hulu makes it so easy to always find something new and interesting to watch. We think all it takes is some time to getting used to navigating around. There have been improvements in the design since last year and browsing through channels has definitely improved.

You can access Hulu’s Live TV service on Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, Xbox360, Apple TV, Roku and Xbox One. Samsung and LG smart TVs also allow Hulu streaming and Live TV. iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, and the web also support it. Among the recent changes and tweaks, the notable ones are the option of “stop suggesting” bad recommendations in iOS which is soon rolling out in more devices.

The descriptions beneath menu icons, details on remote control commands are also noteworthy. One thing that still has much to be desired is the functioning of children’s profiles – age inappropriate recommendations, tough navigation, and unavailability of options to “keep watching” make it a bit bothersome.

Hulu with Live TV – A Combo You Can Rely On

It offers 720p streaming on live channels and 1080p/4K on some movies and on-demand – this is really good as compared to other live TV and streaming bundles. It would be improper to say that its service is worse than other bundles because of the sheer lack of any standard measure for reliability.

This can only be determined through personal use and experience. Hulu supports 60-frames-per-second on Apple TV, Samsung smart TVs, iOS, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. So if you are someone who is particular about smooth streaming, this is for you to note.

Hulu with Live TV has consistently been improving over the past year and even with its streaming restrictions and building up add-on costs it proves itself worthy of all the hype around it.
