This year, the streaming service will bedazzle us with a string of critically acclaimed new shows, movies, and stand-up comedies. To find out which of this year’s Netflix originals are worth your time, follow this guide and see for yourself.

Before We Begin

Even though they’re Netflix Originals, that doesn’t mean that they’re available everywhere on the streaming platform. Some shows or seasons might be missing from your library based on the country you live in. For example, Netflix’s catalog in Germany is missing one of the biggest releases in the world, House of Cards season 6.

So, if you don’t want to face this predicament while binge-watching, better stick to the US version of the channel. Therefore, if you live abroad, make sure to follow this step by step walkthrough on how to unblock US Netflix anywhere in the world. Oh! One more thing. You can find the top providers that actually work with Netflix in the table below.

Unscheduled Upcoming Releases

The release dates of the following shows and movies are yet to be announced in the future. Don’t worry, I’ll be updating the list as soon as anything comes up. Here they are:

Netflix Originals 2019 – Top Picks

Ever since its first original, House of Cards, Netflix has been upping its game when it comes to original content. Nowadays, we have the likes of Sense8, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Narcos, and so many more. If you can’t wait to see how the titles above would look like on your screens, check out the synopsis of my top picks for 2019.

Carmen Sandiego (Series)

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? Apparently, she’s now on Netflix and in crime school. What?? Well, that’s according to the new teaser we got for the show.

We all know who Carmen Sandiego is. I actually grew up watching the woman in a red coat and hat during the animated series run. This new re-imagination will focus on the origins of the international thief. The show will also feature some of her post-school heists, as she travels the world as a thief that only steals from other thieves.

Gina Rodriquez will voice the series lead Carmen. Finn Wolfhard is set to voice Carmen’s partner-in-crime, Player, who provides the voice in her ears during missions. The first season is set to air on January 18th, 2019. If you’re as excited as I am, then you probably want to tune in come this that date and stream it straight on Netflix.

Marvel’s The Punisher (Season 2)

If you’ve seen the first season, then you already know how Frank’s family assassination was wrapped up. Let me say it was a nice and neat “Chapeau Bas” worthy ending. You might think that the story should’ve ended back in season 1, but when it comes to Frank Castle, we all know that he will find himself wrapped up in a whole new mess sooner than later. Do you have an answer on how he digs his way out of it? Yeah, you guessed it… in blood.

Season two will feature a whole new Frank Castle adventure that keeps us craving for more. The Punisher is bringing a serious A-game to its latest season and it will be available on Netflix come January 18th.

V-Wars (Series)

Vampire fans all over the world, especially Vampire Diaries, your immortal heartthrob Ian Somerhalder is back with yet another fantasy vampire series. This time, however, he’s not one and it’s on Netflix, not the CW. The show is based on novels of the same name and it’s going to consist of 10 episodes.

The show will focus on Dr. Luther Swann as his life takes a terrible detour when his best friend gets in contact with a mysterious virus turning him into a carnivorous creature. This will highlight the fact that uninfected people will go face to face with vampires and vampires with one another.

Will Luther find a cure to this outrageous disease? How will he face his best friend Michael after becoming one of the most powerful vampire leaders? Looks like this is going to be the horror show everyone’s been waiting for after Haunting on Hill House ended. Let’s be honest, Netflix is in for one bloody year.

Check out what the official trailer of V Wars below:

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Season 2)

Netflix didn’t give us enough time to digest the 1st season of this dark, witchy drama. The outstanding series will return for a second season a little over six months of its initial premiere. For those who watched the first installment and the Christmas Special, this season will cover Sabrina’s life after becoming a full witch.

Post giving her soul to Satan himself, what will the full white-haired witch do? We’ve seen her roaming the hall with the Weird Sisters. Does that mean she’s up to no good? There are rumors that Salem is getting his own episode and that he might be talking this season (I mean Finally!). Anywho, this is what’s out for now as Netflix doesn’t like to spoil much. You can tap into a sneak peek of the season by watching the trailer below.

Our Planet (Docuseries)

Sir David Attenborough everybody. The legend will serve as the voice of Netflix’s own version of Planet Earth, Our Planet. The new ground-breaking, eight-part series will showcase the planet’s most precious species and fragile habitats, revealing amazing sights on Earth in ways they’ve never been seen using the latest in 4k camera technology.

This outstanding four-year project will air on April 5th after being filmed in more than 50 countries across all continents. It will take all the way from the Arctic wilderness and mysterious deep oceans to the vast landscapes of Africa and the beautiful jungles of South America. What do you think? Will this top the highest-ranked series in the world “Planet Earth”? Well, it’s Attenborough and Netflix. I’m sure this is going to be one heck of a journey. Here’s a teaser for the show you’re all waiting for.

Triple Frontier (Film)

Who said the Blockbuster movies only come out in cinemas? Mark the date, March 15th, as Triple Frontier hits the screens on the mega platform Netflix.

Count with me. Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal, are you kidding me? When you see names like these, then a movie is a must-see. Triple Threat is a thriller that follows a group of ex-Special Forces who plan to rob a very powerful cartel in South America.

However, when events take an unexpected turn and threaten to spiral out of control, how will they prevail in the upcoming battle for survival? Will they be using their skills, their loyalties, or their morals? Will it be a bloodbath? We just have to wait and see. But for now, check out the trailer.

The Laundromat (Film)

Remember the Oscar-nominated film “The Post”, yeah, you’ll relive the same experience when you get to see Meryl Streep’s The Laundromat. Not only that, but the movie has a long list of actors that will elevate Netflix’s originality and production values.

It’s based on Secrecy World, a book that covers the events that occurred back in 2015 when 11.5 million documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonesca got revealed and detailed by a group of journalists covering the various legal and illegal ways powerful people and corporations hide their money in offshore accounts.

The casting is incredible. It will feature the likes of Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, Alex Pettyfer, and David Schwimmer. The laundromat’s release date is yet to be confirmed. For the time being, here’s what the Hollywood Reporter has to say about the movie.

IO (Film)

A new dystopian film is arriving on Netflix for you to obsess over. “IO” takes place decades in the future where the earth is full of toxic gas the forces the human race to take shelter on one of Jupiter’s moons.

The movie will follow Sam, a young scientist who still lives on earth safe and away from the air outside in the mountain-top lab. She dedicates her life to find a way for humans to adapt and sustain the harsh new atmosphere earth is going through.

However, when a sudden visitor lands unexpectedly in her life, Sam must make a hasty decision to whether she’ll board the final shuttle leaving for the new colony on Jupiter’s moon, or fight for the planet she grew up on. To go deeper into the movie airing January 18, here’s the official Netflix Trailer.

Polar (Film)

I’ve been a Mads Mikkelsen fan ever since I saw him back in Hannibal. And now, as he stars in the new Netflix film Polar, maybe I’ll like him even more.

Mikkelsen will play a former assassin “Black Kaiser”, who is living a normal life until his past comes knocking back on his door. New assassins on the block attempt to take him out along with kidnapping his young neighbor portrayed by none other than Vanessa Hudgens.

The movie is based on the webcomic and graphic novel series by Victor Santos minus the black, white, and orange colors. So, if you were ever a fan of John Wick or just familiar with who Matt Lucas and Richard Dreyfuss are, the Polar will be your streaming chilly blast on January 25th.

Velvet Buzzsaw

Who doesn’t like art? It can be pretentious and beautiful yet deadly sometimes. Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in the new mystery thriller where he’s put in the middle of an artistic mystery that endangers everyone in his close circle.

Nightcrawler’s Dan Gilroy will team up again with Gyllenhaal who’ll be playing an art enthusiast. However, events start to get a weird turn when some paintings by a virtually unknown artist take over the art scene of Los Angeles. Who’s the creator? What do the paintings mean? In my opinion, these paintings are more sinister than the eye can comprehend.

Lucifer (Season 4)

Lucifer is back again, but this time Netflix is taking him under its wings. The streaming service ordered a fourth season of the show after obtaining the rights from Fox. Fans where devastated when they knew that Fox was canceling the show.

You’ll get to see your favorite stars again on May 8th. All of them are returning including Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, Lauren German as Detective Chloe Decker, Kevin Alejandro as Detective Dan Espinoza, D.B. Woodside as Amenadiel, Lesley-Ann Brandt as Maze, Aimee Garcia as Ella Lopez and Rachael Harris as Dr. Linda Martin.

Now, I’m sure you’re excited to know what this season and Netflix are giving you. Well, I have a small idea about the 4th season. It’s going to be none other than the first sinner, Eve. The question is, why is Eve (Inbar Lavi) back? Does she want revenge for being tempted by Lucifer millions of years ago and got her out of Eden? or is it something else entirely?

We’ve waited so long to get a fourth season, we don’t want to spoil the fun of it. Tune in on May 8th and enjoy it to the max, Lucifans.
