Roku USA American Channels How to get ?- VPN or DNS ?

Roku has great American channels. All Rokus support the same US channels from Roku 1, Roku 2, Roku 3 and the Roku Streaming Stick. The problem is that if you are outside the USA  simply as a Roku fan, or an expat working overseas. You cant even add American channels and apps to your Roku “Netflix, Hulu Plus, ABC, MLB, NHL, HBO“. And even if you bring the Roku device from the USA with American channels loaded. The channels will still not work. In this simple guide, I will show you to to get and American Roku account, how to bypass location restrictions and unblock/add  American channels on Roku. This guide has been tested in Canada, UK, Germany, Dubai, and France, it should, however, work anywhere outside the USA.

Roku American Channels – The basics

In order to get American channels on Roku you need to appear to be coming from the USA both as an account holder, and as a streaming device. So what you need to do is the following :

  • Reset Your Roku
  • Sign up for a new Roku account AFTER using one of the two methods below. If you sign up for a Roku account while appearing to be from a non-US location you will NOT get American channels.
  • Setup your network “Not the Roku itself, it has limited Network config options” with one of the two methods below.
  • Log in with your American Roku account.
  • Add American Channels
  • Enjoy!

Get American Channels on Roku – The VPN Way

VPN stands for Virtual Private Tunnel, using a VPN will allow you to set your traffic to be coming all from the USA or otherwise, based on your VPN server. A few notes about VPN are listed below :

  1. All your traffic is encrypted, this will prevent your ISP or Government watchdogs from spying on you.
  2. All your traffic is going to appear to be coming from the country of your VPN server “USA in this case”.
  3. Local stations with geo restrictions “ex: BBC Iplayer if you are in UK”won’t work anymore, as you appear to be coming from US.
  4. Roughly a 10% bandwidth speed test with a good VPN provider.
  5. You need a VPN enabled router for Roku to work with VPN.

Below is a list of VPN providers, tested and assessed based on speed, reliability and support quality.

However, not all devices are supported by VPN “Smart TV, Apple TV are two popular devices that don’t support VPN”.  If you are trying to get those devices to work. See the below.

Get American Channels on Roku – The DNS Way

Smart DNS Proxies are a different kind of technology. They do not encrypt your traffic, nor do they re-route all traffic. Smart DNS Providers “at least the good ones” apply a smart logic to only re-route the relevant geolocation aware chunks of your traffic.  A few notes about Smart DNS can be seen below:

  1.  No encryption. But in return there is no speed penalty.
  2. You can watch American Netflix on Roku and BBC Iplayer on your Apple TV at the same time. I.e. multiple regions are supported simultaneously. A total of around 90 sites are supported.
  3. Easy to setup for Roku or otherwise, all it takes is to sign up, get DNS codes and setup those codes on your router. See Video and Screenshot installation instructions for setup here.
  4. If you are from a country where the ISP applies transparent proxies and or DNS hijacking. Smart DNS will most likely not work for you.

If you want to give Smart DNS a try. Sign up for a free 7 day trial at Unlocator. Set up your router and enjoy. I did also write a comparison of Unlocator vs Other Smart DNS providers.

  1. I am moving to Mexico and will take my roku with me. I need to be able to access my USA channels. Do I need a VPN and if so which one

    1. Hello Debra. Yes, you will need a VPN to access American channels on your Roku while in Mexico. Your best bets are ExpressVPN or BulletVPN.

  2. Hi, I am looking to set up a US Roku to work in my home in Canada. I realize that a VPN is the best way to go; however we use Xplornet which is a satellite based Internet provider and they use a Dynamic IP with a double NAT (whatever that is!!). Am I still able to set up a VPN with these guy’s and which VPN provider would be able to cope with Xplornet sat. system?? My home Wi-Fi is a TP-Link Archer C5. Thanks for any advice

    1. Hello Eric. You should be able to use a VPN even when your ISP provides you with a dynamic IP address. I would suggest going with either ExpressVPN or BulletVPN. The VPN connection needs to be set up on your TP-Link router.

  3. Hi
I was wondering if I can use Roku in Fiji. I have tried to download the mobile app but there seems to be a local restriction. Would Roku work If I would purchase a Roku device and install it on my laptop?
Could I open a channel and broadcast worldwide from Fiji? What are the requirements for broadcasting on Roku especially from Fiji and is there a set up fee?

  4. Hi I live in Japan and have both a ROKU and an Apple TV. I subscribed to ExpressVPN as well as NordVPn. I also have a DNS account. I have a DLinks router. I have tried all conceivable combinations and cannot get the ROKU nor the Apple TV to work with the VPN to access USA or Canadian channels. I can use my ROKU and the Apple TV with my router to access some channels but many are blocked by Japan. I have been told that the way the Japanese cable their internet into the buildings means that you must use their IP address. I tried to change this into my router and it would not connect to the internet. ie. computer tablet etc. would not work. Any suggestions? Thank you. i

  5. Im currently located in Europa and i used NordVpn to change my ip in Us, and it does change it, i could instal programs directly from my Roku account ( before i couldnt because they saw in from Europa but afterchange ip and make new acc on Roku they saw in from US). The main problem is that even if i instal them on player, the roku player says my current location is not supported(so the player knows im not from Us ? thats bcz of tv…? ). Any advice pls ? What am i doing wrong ?

      1. Hello mate. NordVpn is good, i dont know the rest of Vpn programs but you can make some research. So what i did? I have made my lap to be a wifi router ( with US IP ) and i conn the Roku player to this conn i have created, so everything is fine now bcz he see the conn comes from US :). I didnt tried to make setup vpn on my router bcz i see you need 2 wifi routers …?

  6. I live in South Korea but I’m currently visiting in the US. I received a Roku Ultra yesterday to use with my tv in Korea with Netflex, HBO, etc..
My question are: Should I set up my Roku account and load up with Netflix and other streaming services now, while in the US, or not? If I sign up here in the US, when I return to Korea, do I still need to follow the instructions given above, ie, reset my Roku once in Korea, sign up for a new Roku account in Korea, and then logout and sign in again with my US account?
    Many thanks for your help.

    1. Hello Amelie. I suggest setting up your Roku account and device while in the USA. It’s much easier that way. There’s no need to reset the Roku or create a new Roku account once you arrive in Korea.

  7. As a Canadian do I need an American credit card and matching American address to use an Vpn to work with Roku. I can easily set up a American address but does it all have to match? Not sure what to choose to maximum streaming content and give up cable. Any issue with Bell fibe internet?

  8. Hi, I’m leaving for the Bahamas soon and want to set up my Roku before I go. So far I’ve bought a router with vpn capability and know I need to get service with vpn provider. What are next steps. Thanks

  9. My ASUS router is able to be configured to use an outbound VPN, like Express VPN. Wouldn’t Smart VPN be essentially the same thing? Would it be better to stop using unlocator all together and go with Express VPN configured on the router? I just have not had good luck with speeds and streaming over vpn over there.

    1. Charles Roswell

Unlike Smart VPN, a traditional VPN connection requires you to pass all your traffic through the VPN server. That isn’t the case with Smart VPN. There is no option that’ll allow you to only partially pass traffic through Smart VPN on routers. Setting up ExpressVPN on your router would be ideal in a situation where you constantly suffer from DNS Hijacking.

  10. I will be staying in France at a hotel that does DNS hijacking. Because of this I use Unblocker.com and I have to use their SMART VPN. This works to get my US streaming sites (except Netflix). I am currently in the US and attempting to set up before I leave. This is my idea: I have a regular netgear router I will plug into the hotel network. I have an asus router that supports OUTBOUND VPN. I will configure the ASUS router with the Unblocker DNS settings, and plug ROKU into it. Will this bypass the DNS hijacking? If not, will my VPN account settings added to the ASUS router work?

If you are wondering why I have two routers, the hotel only has wireless connectivity, and my Netgear router allows me to connect to it without a cable. I tried and failed to set up my laptop as a router per your advice, but I couldn’t get it to work well.

    1. Charles Roswell

Hi. As far as I’m aware Smart VPN cannot be setup on routers. What you have to do is to direct all DNS request from port 53 to port 54 so the DNS request will escape the filtering. In order to do so you need a router, which support IP tables.

  11. I live in Mexico; but will be visiting the US shortly. I want to get and set up everything I need for a ROKU while in the US. When I get back to Mexico, should I connect my (new) VPN enabled router to the existing Mexico router, or just do away with the Mexico and only use the new VPN enabled router?

    1. Hi. I think your best option would be connecting your VPN enabled router to the router you currently use in Mexico. That way you will not have to make any further configuration. Simply connect the WAN port of the VPN router to the LAN port of your main router using an Ethernet cable.

  12. Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had idea with regards to a problem that is perplexing me.

I have a UK Roku running in Australia connected via a router running DD-WRT with a PPTP tunnel to the UK, my VPN provider is PIA. I set up the Roku in the UK with UK billing details etc and it all worked fine. Since I have transfered it to Australia everything I have tried works fine ITVPlayer, All4, Channel5 etc the exception is BBC iPlayer, it allows me to browse content but won’t let me play anything, simply says it is unable to play the content.

If I connect an android device or laptop to the same network I am able to use iPlayer just fine, so it does not seem to be an issue with my VPN implementation or VPN provider.

The only strange thing I have noticed with the Roku is that if I set the timezone to automatic it knows my timezone is Australia, I don’t understand how it can know that?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Ian

  13. HI there
I have an Asus RT-N66u router in the basement of a two storey home. Attached to it I am running a wired connection to the second storey where it terminates in a “switch” (one input four outs). The switch is connected to an all in one printer and two PCs. One PC runs a bittorrent client and the other MUST NOT run through any stream modification as my wife uses it on a secure connection to her work. In the rest of the house I have two xbox 360’s which I want to run (American) Netflix and one television with a Roku premiere which I want to access the US side of Roku as well. I am in Canada. How do I satisfy everything I wish to do? Do I need to “stack” routers?

  14. I am taking the Huawei Mobile broadband modem to India from the USA. I plan to use it either as a secondary router to MTNL internet service in Mumbai or I could use it as the only router and connect directly to the MTNL service. I want to know if the Huawei model E5770 is VPN friendly.
I have a Roku 4 that I use in the USA. If I bring it to india what changes do I need to make to get it to work with the Huawei router. The three channels I need are PBS, Netflix and Sling

  15. Hi, I’ve just got a roku stick in the UK, but wanted to get US channels. I have followed the instructions on here for my DNS settings etc & signed up on roku trying to do a US account. The payment page loaded up for me with details set as if i was in the US & even the little verified box on the roku site shows as roku US. The first attempt it didn’t show that as I hadn’t changed my location on the Unlocator account, so it all looks fine. However, when I go on my Smart TV & then it gives the activation code, every time I try to enter it, the page then refreshes & goes to the en-gb version & will only offer me UK channels. What have I done wrong here & what bit do I need to do again to fix this & get access to the US channels? Thanks.

  16. I had a roku 4 purchased a few years ago to try and use it US channels I live in Canada however I quickly found out because it does not have the manual IP change capablity I changed it for an Apple TV 3rd gen because it has that ability. My internet router is bell fibe and its sagemcom from them it doesnt bypass or allow change in IP through it locks it so I cant use my router I need the manual change I use expressvpn I now sold my apple tv and want to get 4th gen but would love to get roku again but how would I go around my router situation?

    1. Hi Manuela. What you could do in your situation is connecting a secondary router to your current router. Use an Ethernet cable to connect the LAN port of the main router to the WAN port of the secondary router. Once done, you can make the necessary adjustments on the secondary router and then connect your Roku to it.

  17. I tried using the HMA DNA setting and ExpressVPN (separately) with a Ausu RT-N66U router and I could not get either to give me access to Amazon movies through a Roku Express Stick from Costa Rica

  18. Just an FYI…I use UNLOCATOR smart DNS. My hotel “hijacks” the DNS I guess, so I also have to use their vpn workaround (no speed loss, somehow)…but it works like a CHAMP for everything except US Netflix. I use it for HULUPLUS, HBO NOW, CBS ALL ACCESS and SLING. No problems. I do have to use the French Netflix, however, but that is turning out to be a small cost. The benefits totally outweigh the lack of US Netflix.

  19. I have a ROKU 3 with a US Based Roku account. I am stationed overseas and staying in a hotel where I do not have access to the router. I am using a SMART DNS service to access US Content on my windows laptop and it works like a champ. Is there anyway that I can jailbreak the ROKU to get access to enter my smart DNS settings?

  20. – Holy moly after reading all these posts it seems as if I need a Stanford engineering degree to hook up this Roku overseas. I am going to Japan next month and would like to use a Roku there. If I set up my Roku account in the US before I go and simply plug it in in Japan, is that all I knew to do?

    1. Hi Ronny. Unfortunately, you still need to setup either VPN or Smart DNS on your router in Japan in order to unblock American channels on your Roku. While an American Roku account is necessary, I am afraid it is not enough.

      1. thank you for the reply. (awesome picture with your son!)
i may be limited to using wifi the apartment building in tokyo provides, so i may not be using a router/modem. in that case which do you recommend; vpn or smart dns ?
        thank you.

  21. hello vpn guru!

plain and simple i just got my tech to install telus 150 fiber internet. now I’m looking to purchase a roku smart stick but saw on their website that they only have 20 channels in canada which i reside. can you guide me and teach me on how to get all the good usa channels from this roku. i haven’t bought it yet but should i buy it in the states or here in canada??? any tips would be appreciated guru!

    1. Hi Bao. There are basically two ways to get American channels on a Roku: Smart DNS and VPN. For both methods, you need to configure your router since changing network configuration on the Roku itself is not allowed. You also need to create an American Roku account. Otherwise, you will not be able to add US channels to it. Depending on the channels you want to unblock, you might be better off purchasing a different streaming device.

  22. Hi. Will be travelling to US soon and plan to get a ROKU 4 . Would you recommend I set up a US Roku account and Roku box while I am in the US ? Will this cause any issues once I am back home using a dns / vpn service ? Thanks

    1. Hi Kat. Yup, setting up a US Roku account while still in USA is definitely recommended. There should be no issues with the account regardless of whether you are using Smart DNS or VPN.

  23. I have a Roku streaming stick. We’re going to Europe for 5 mo. and going to be in Ireland, UK and Scotland, Italy, Austria, Germany, and Amsterdam, staying mostly in Airbnb type rentals. Do you have any suggestions as to whether I should go with vpn or dns? Is there a small portable router you would recommend? I’ve had the stick for awhile and tried to use it on our boat but, with not great wifi availabile, I was only ever to try it out a few times. Should I reset it here in the US before I leave?

    1. Hi Susan. Well, routers are usually small in size and weight so you should not have much trouble finding one that suits your needs. You can connect your router’s WAN port to the Airbnb’s LAN port using an Ethernet cable, so make sure you have one with you before you leave. Whether to use VPN or Smart DNS really depends on your personal preferences. Both work quite well abroad. Do not rest the Roku before leaving the US, as creating an American Roku account abroad can be bit of a hassle.

      1. I see there are a couple of Linksys routers that are vpn enabled but they weigh 3 lbs. We’re flying an airline where checked bags are limited to 44 lbs so every lb counts. If I use DNS instead, then I could just get any router?

        1. Most routers do support Smart DNS. Modems provided by ISPs usually do not, however. Alternatively, you could use an Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV Stick since Smart DNS can be directly setup on them. Please note that you need an Apple ID for Apple TV and Amazon account for the Fire TV. Also, channels supported vary from one device to another.

  24. Hello. Thanks for all the info so far. If one is planning on using a vpn service for the roku 2 rather than the smartdns, is blocking google dns still an issue when trying for US Netflix in Canada?
Also, I have a Canadian Netflix account with a Canadian email address on account. When I set up my Roku with an American account will this be an issue when trying to access US netlfix even with a vpn service?
Thanks in advance for your reply.

    1. Hey. If you setup an American VPN connection on your router, there should be no need to block Google DNS. You can still use your Canadian Netflix account to access American Netflix using either VPN or Smart DNS.

  25. Óscar García

Ni guys if i parchase a roku4 and i live in México can how can i se all channels from usa if that posible , and if posible cut you tech me how to do it step by step

  26. Hi
I am leaving for Mexico from US will be staying at various hotels and homes. I just bought Roku 1 which was recommend based on not knowing what types of TV’s (older newer model) there will be.
I was told to NOT set up until I get to Mexico but from what I am reading, I’m getting the impression I should set up here before I leave?
    What are your thoughts?

    1. Hi Lisa. I would definitely recommend creating a Roku account and setting up your Roku device before leaving the US to Mexico.

  27. I am moving to China from US soon and will be provided free wifi in the hotel. Can I setup my Samsung Galaxy phone to be a wifi hotspot and connect to my VPN account on my phone, then access the wifi signal with Roku to get my US channels?? I don’t think I’ll be able to connect a router anywhere.

    1. Hi Mary. In theory, setting up VPN on your Smartphone and then creating a hotspot on it will only work if you are using a mobile Internet connection. You cannot setup a hotspot on a Smartphone if you are using WiFi. Alternatively, you can setup VPN on your laptop while using WiFi, and then create a virtual router to share the VPN connection with your Roku.

  28. I’m considering purchasing a Roku. Would you suggest a VPN over a DNS for use in the Bahamas? Had a box and don’t know why I can’t get it to work anymore so I’m looking for a solution. I have an older style Sony flat screen that has use and hdmi connections.

    1. Hey there. If you want to use VPN, you need a router that supports VPN setup. A good example would be a DD-WRT router. As for Smart DNS, the router should support DNS configuration such as Linksys or TP-Link router.

  29. Oh, please allow me to clarify — my family’s back in the USA and our home cable subscription includes Netflix and Hulu Plus.

    1. Hi. An American cable subscription should allow you to access ABC GO, WatchESPN, FOX, Disney, HBO GO, among other channels. However, Netflix and Hulu are stand-alone video-on-demand streaming services and therefore you need a paid subscription for each service.

  30. Hi, Alinux. I currently live in Manila and have set up my Roku 3 (bought from Amazon, USA) and have successfully set it up to with the VPN to access the video content of my Amazon Prime account. To avoid paying an additional monthly subscription fees for Netflix & Hulu Plus, for example, I read somewhere that it is possible to simply enter my family’s cable subscription account number to get free access. Would you know if this is true and how to do this? Many thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide, Alinux! :)

  31. I’m in Australia and looking at getting a Roku 3 for Netflix and US tv. I’m thinking of using a vpn and am wondering if a vpn will affect my phone voip. I have not purchased anything or signed up with anyone so open to any suggestions .
    TIA

  32. Hello,
I have a roku 2 and I followed all your steps to set up a US roku account(with unblock.us) and got a VPN(checked it was connected), however when I try to play free content from channels like Fox and ABC it keeps telling me I am outside the US. Am I doing something wrong or maybe is the unblock thing?
    Regards

  33. Hi there! I’m currently living in the US and have a Roku Stick. I’m moving to South Korea in March and I was wondering if you have a suggestion of which would be better; a VPN or DSN?

Also, since I already have an American Roku with all the channels I want, do I still need to reset it?

Thank you for all your help!

    1. Hi Gabby. Since US channels are already set on your Roku, there is no need to reset it. Both Smart DNS and VPN need to be setup on your router in order for you to be able to unblock US channels on your Roku. Most routers do support changing DNS and it’s pretty straight forward. With VPN, you need a router that supports setting up VPN on it.

      1. Ok, so I have to use Both the VSN and DSN on the same router. Should I buy the router in the States? If so, is there a specific router you would suggest I buy?

Thank you soo much for all the help! I’m not really all that tech savy, so this is all new to me!

        1. Hi. You have to use either VPN or Smart DNS on your router and not both. One of these two choices should suffice. Linksys routers are usually very reliable for Smart DNS. If you wish to setup VPN, you need a DD-WRT router.

          1. Ok got ya!

So if for whatever reason this doesn’t work for me, do you know of a way that I can watch Nextflix, Funimation, and other Roku channels on my laptop? I know that most of the Roku apps that I watch can also be watched online, so just in case the router doesn’t work I’m hoping that I can at least continue watching on my laptop.

  34. I have a new roku 2 and an american netflix account that I am trying to access to Japan.
I have PIA VPN running through my ddwrt router. When I connect my Roku to the router to watch netflix I get the error NW-2-5 and cannot connect to netflix.

I disabled the vpn on the router and tired using a free trial of unlocator. With unlocator DNS applied I am able to connect to USA netflix no problem.

My VPN router is correctly connected through USA. Why am I having issues connecting through the VPN router method?

    1. Hi. It could be that the American IP addresses you are getting from PIA have been flagged as belonging to hosting services. If Unlocator is working for you, I suggest switching over to Smart DNS.

    1. In order to get American channels on your Roku, you need to create an American Roku account by following these steps while Smart DNS is enabled on your PC/Mac. Once done, reset your Roku to factory settings and link it to the new US Roku account you have created.

  35. Thank you Alinux for all your answers and patience. I use ExpressVPN and can access US Netflix with no problem. I need to access more, CBS All Access… But I can never be able to sign up. Is it due to my Canadian credit card or the Canadian Roku account or both.

    1. Hi JB. You do need an American credit card to create a CBS account and an American Roku account to get the CBS channel on your Roku. You can find instructions on how to create a US Roku account here .

  36. I bought a roku 2 in canada…..I spend winters in florida…..is vpn the best way to unblock NHL Gamecenter while down there? And will i be able to watch us netflix because I’m in the US even though the roku was set up as a canadian account. Thank you very much for your expertise.

    1. Hi. If you own a Rogers NHL GCL account, Unlocator DNS will not work since it does not support Canadian NHL GCL. If you own an American or International NHL GCL account, you can bypass NHL blackouts on your Roku using VPN or Smart DNS.

As for getting US Netflix, you can get American Netflix on your Roku in USA even if you’re using a Canadian Roku account. No need for VPN or Smart DNS in this case.

      1. thank you..how exactly does a VPN which would be installed on my laptop, interface with my Roku? Does the Roku wirelessly sense that the new IP address is in Mexico or Brazil or wherever you choose?

  37. I´m waiting for my roku streaming stick to arrive to me in EU, is it possible to block google dns if you have a tp-link router with dd-wrt firmware, and have it setup so you only block google dns to the roku stick, but all the other devices who is connected to the same router still get the google dns as normal..

  38. Roku 3 and DNS solution don’t work since recent update. I’m not sure if this is covered but I found out the hard way. I have been using Netflix USA via our smart TV but had a friend bring a Roku 3 up from USA to Canada. We followed all the instructions to get this to work with our US netflix and it didn’t. I did it several times, setup new Roku accounts each time. Still the USA channels were missing. I then read in a couple of places that Netflix now hard codes the DNS into it’s application for ROKU 3 (not sure if same with other units) and it doesn’t matter what DNS my house router is running. We sent the Roku back and are back to the Samsung “smart” tv interface.

  39. Hi, great site and excellent information!! Thank you…

Our Roku 3 (latest version) was set up as a Canadian account. We are using HMA for our VPN and it was set for the US. We are currently in Mexico and have a Samsung Smart TV. It keeps reverting to a Mexican IP address. Could this be because the Roku was set up with a Canadian address and/or credit card?

    Diana

  40. Any advice about using US Roku 3 in Japan?
Also I want all internet access to appear as if I am in the US…I guess that means us VPN..

  41. Hello

I’m in the UK and want to get CBS all access but they are now blocking all non U.S. credit cards. If I get a U.S. Roku account will that work?

    Thanks

  42. Hi, just a quick question.
I plan on using a smart dns service to set up an American Roku streaming stick in the UK. If I do this through editing the network settings on my router as recommended, will this have an impact on other devices on the network which are not using a smart dns service, or will it just impact my roku?
    Thanks.

  43. Hello,

I just installed Roku in the Dominican Republic. Now Netflix and Amazon Prime video works. But, some of my favorite Netflix TV shows I have been watching every day do not exist now in Netflix. What can I do about this? They are Suits and Covert Affairs.

    Thanks for the great site.

  44. Hi
i have a roku 3 and lie in canada i signed up for the free trial of unlocator and all is good but still cant get u.s Netflix or hulu. is this cause i use a canadian credit card?

    1. Hi
Did you create a US Roku account ? That is needed for Hulu , for Netflix you need to block Google DNS.

      1. I have a VPN and payed for Netflix et al through my Roku account with Paypal. What is the issue with renting movies with Paypal through the Roku? Do all the services check Paypal location e.g. Amazon, VUDU, M-Go, etc

    2. sharron, I am also from Canada…did this process work for you ? I am thinking about getting a ruku box as well.

  45. Do I need to use the VPN each time I want to watch something, or it is just at the moment of the sign up to the US Roku account that I need the VPN ?

    1. It depends on the channel but for the most part streaming is restricted you you need VPN or Smart DNS while watching.

  46. Hi,

Is it possible to have Canadian AND American content on a Roku with a VPN ? Do you need two Roku accounts for this ? Is it possible to switch accounts once the setup is complete ?

    1. Yes you can alternate btw different Netflix regions, without further change on Roku, simply change the VPN server location you are connecting to.

      1. I wasn’t referring to Netflix. I was talking about the other channels (Radio-Canada, Fox. CBC. Etc).

Hi, im from mexico, bouught a roku 3 on chicago 2 days ago, installed on my house, but i saw that my region is blocked, i reset as default and delete my account, i want to have all the access for the usa channels and apps, i got hola unblocker in my pc, but i think thats not all i need to get freeway on my roku right?

  48. I am following the steps in my router and I have a FIRST DHCP number and a second DHCP number. I can’t find the DNS. It is a Bell modem. Is this that I need to change.

  49. I reside in America and currently use Roku 3 to manage typical US apps (netflix, hulu, amazon prime, etc). I want to use a smart dns solution to gain access to UK NowTV/SkyGo. Is it possible to access UK and US apps simultaneously on my Roku? If not, do I need to reset my Roku every time I switch? Is my best bet to invest in a second device dedicated to UK apps with a second Roku account? Thanks so much your advice is highly appreciated.

    1. Hi
You can only get access to one at one time, you will need to use a UK Roku account as well Unlocator do have a Roku region changer, not all Smart DNS providers do.

  50. ketiyiah4avin

does the wwe network , work on a roku 2 in the uk with out having to do anything as iam not able to use all that tec stuff. hopefully you say yes.

  51. I have been told that the latest update of Roku firmware (v6.1) has resulted in Roku users being unable to switch Netflix regions (Can v’s US). This is due to the new firmware hard coding of an additional Google DNS which interferes with our service.

The only way to fix this is to make some changes to your router settings.

    Is this true???

And if it is the case, what is the workaround.

    1. Well I just bought the New Faster 2015 Roku2 and it turns out I cannot switch regions for Netflix (Hulu Plus, HBO GO, Amazon work all well they show US shows when connected to the US VPN). I have a configured Router with US IP and I connect from Mexico and was surprised to find this it shows only Mexico Netflix movies/shows. If I switch to my Roku stick, no problems I can switch to US or Mexico Netflix depending on the network I connect to. So this New Roku2 is going back to Amazon and I will keep using my Roku Stick.

  52. I have to setup VPN in my router to access USA, which I do not want/need. Is it possible to setup a separate connection just for the Roku, so only the Roku is using the VPN? Is there an usb adapter or something I can use?

    1. Hi
Yes , if you setup the VPN on that router, and then connect it to the main router. This way only connect the devices you want to the VPN enabled router.

  53. live 5 months in US and 7 months in Canada. My roku has a US account associated with and payment occurr through Itunes. in Canada I wish to contiue with my Roku channels included the Tennis channel my choice is not to change my IP on my router. What are my options? Should I use Vpn through my laptop or DNS ? All my componentsv such as DVD , Applle TV and are locating in a other room large closet set up and set up through a central remote based on the network , therefore I wish to avoid using another IP address.
    Any recommendations ? Appreciated G.

  54. It have direct tv and can access the programs on my tablet and iPhone here in the US. I will be traveling to Mexico for awhinle. Is there a way.for me to access that same programming there?

  55. I have a US Roku and my question is can I use my Canadian Paypal to sign up and not raise any flags. My email address has a .com extension so that shouldn’t raise a flag. Have my VPN setup and my ip is based in NY.

  56. Miguel Navarrro

@alinux I want to buy Roku here in Canada but I just saw that this Gov. Controls everything here, there is a way I can get American Roku ? Trough this Canadian Account ??

    1. A Canadian roku is the same like a USA Roku, all you need to do is use VPN or SmartVPN to create a USA ROKU account and to stream from Roku

  57. 2 questions; Canadian setting up US Roku account. 1’st- is account login email is [email protected] will the Canadian email login matter? quite obvious its Canadian.
2’nd – for the credit card info from a postal code to a zip code as per the example given my spoof zip would be 00000. I’m thinking this won’t work. Would PayPaL be best option for payment option keeping in mind my paypal is linked to [email protected]

  58. Hi,
I have a Roku 3 and have set up DNS and static IPs to get Netflix and dishworld to work in australia. Netflix works fine, but dishworld still gives a location error message. In theory, it should work….so i’m not sure what else to do. Are you able to shed some light? Thanks!

  59. Hello! I live in Mexico and my sister is going to Texas soon. I want to know if she buys me a Roku there (which one, if any?) would I be able to see ABC, CBS and/or NBC channels here, and would there be any charge for these channels?

    1. Hello, me again! Would you mind answering my question regarding the Roku? My sister is going to Texas in 2 weeks, and I would like to know, before I ask her to buy one for me. Thanks, I appreciate any help in this matter!

  60. Hi, Excellent Website. You actually reply to comments in a helpful way. I bought a Canadian Roku 3 and have it running as a Canadian service. Now I want to switch to US channels. I have the main router Cisco DPC3825 (provided by Rogers ISP). Then I have a secondary wireless router Linksys WRT546 ver.6 plugged into the Cisco. I mostly use the Linksys for access. Do I need to modify both routers with VPN or DNS? Do I need to reset my Roku or will it remember Canadian config? Currently I do not see any Hulu listed. Will the Hulu show up after modification?
I also have Canadian Netflix on my Roku. Do I need to change my Canadian Netflix to US account also to make sure there is no Canadian affiliation on my Roku whatsoever?
Sorry if that is too many questions. Your help is appreciated.

  61. Hi, I have Bell Canada services, Do I need to plug another wireless router in Bell’s? How will the VPN detect the right router????Thanks.

    1. It really depends on your router, if you do have a secondary router for Smart DNS or VPN your devices should all connect to that router. THe Bell router is simply a gateway for the secondary router in this case, and the devices in your home network do not need to know about it.

  62. I am in the USA. I want to buy a Roku set it up at my moms house then take it back to Canada. Will that work? Will I still be able to get the USA channels or will it be picked up when I plug it in in Canada?

    1. Hi
Am sorry for the late reply, Rokus are not firmware locked. As such you can buy a Roku anywhere and using a Geo unblocking service such as VPN or DNS you can make it show UK/CA/USA channels from anywhere.

  63. Hi! thanks for this information!
If I were to buy a Roku 3 in Canada, am I correct in assuming that it will get all of the US selection if I follow the steps above? Or is there something about a Roku 3 bought in Canada that “marks” it as non-US and won’t get US media regardless of whether you have a VPN or DNS?
    Thanks again!
    Stephen

    1. Hi
Roku does not have firmware restrictions, it really just depends on the ROku account. In short, use VPN or DNS to create a US Roku account, then use the same DNS or VPN to connect and stream your ROku stick

  64. We have homes in both the U.S. and Thailand. We maintain a TWC account in the US. We want to watch our American channels on our Smart TV in Thailand. Will the Roku allow us to do this. I’m in the U.S. now and will purchase one before I go back to Thailand if you tell me this will work.

  65. I’m in the u.s and I’m trying to set up my roku to watch net flix movies using my 7 days free trial but when I go to netflix it asks me to enter my credit card number, so my question is if I have to get an account with neflix and pay monthly, wyats the advantage of this then?

  66. I live in canada amd have my roku1 setup with a smart dns. I have set up a American roku account and have netflix and all yhe American channels… i want to subscribe to some of the paif chanels but i asks me who my American ISP is and for an activation code from the provider. Hoe can i get yhese channels???

    1. In that case you are stuck, you need a USA friend who can provide one, or look around in forums for people who rent out US Cable TV subscriptions

  67. I use my phone as my home’s “hotspot” and it won’t transmit a wifi signal if connected via vpn. Do you know of a workaround? Thanks

  68. Thanks!
Do you know if either of the above methods will also work if I want to log in with my Cable Provider and watch the Cable programming?
    Thanks

  69. If i change my VPN will it affect anything else on my PC? I live in Ontario Canada also Ruko ask for your credit card which has a Canadian address

  70. Hi I am from Ontario Canada and plan on buying the Roku 3 but am dumb when it comes to this stuff is there an idiot proof way for me to unblock the us channels

    1. It will only work if you do have a router that does block Google DNS, which is not a biggie, and really not that hard, and most routers support it. If you use VPN on the other hand it should be a few steps as well only

  71. Appreciate your expertise in these matters. In Canada, there are Roku models for sale that are labelled ‘Canadian model’. From the discussions above, I expect this won’t affect our ability to use the VPN method to set up for US channels. Do you have any insight into the differences between the U.S. and Canadian Roku models?

    1. The CA model works, you need to use VPN or Smart DNS to setup a USA roku account and then use Roku through the new service this will show up the USA channels

  72. Alinux, Thank you for sharing your technical expertise. I’m an American living in Scotland. The main reason for my decision to buy a Roku is to get US channels. I have an elementary knowledge/aptitude pertaining to networking and hardware/software issues. Knowing my limitations, will it be easier to get my Roku from the US or does it matter?

    1. Hi
Actually it does not matter where you get your Roku from, but if you choose to use Smart DNS you will have to block Google DNS on your router to get the US channel list on Roku, which is rather easy if your router supports it. You can check the Smart DNS Provider above, they do normally help with the setup and they have a 7 day free trial, so there is nothing to loose.

  73. I tried to set up my belkin router tonight using Dns thru google and spoofing California but when I set up my roku and connected to the belkin it still identified my ISP in Mexico and restricted by region. I assume from all this and posts that I need to purchase a VPN enabled router is that the easiest answer? I am running out of patience and ideas at this point.

    1. Hi
If you only want American channels on Roku Smart DNS is enough, but you need to block Google DNS on your router, see your Smart DNS Provider docu, as it differs a bit at times from provider to provider. VPN on the other side spoofs ALL your traffic.

  74. I have confirmed that my router that I need to plug in to the provider modem/wireless router is a Belkin Wireless G router model F5D7230-4. Will this work and what do I need to do next please.

  75. I just purchased a roku 3 in the US but live in Mexico for now, my router is supplied by the provider and from what I understand from this site and other peoples comments is that I need to plug into that router another router that can have it changed and use that only for my wifi roku in the tv room. Is this roughly correct and what am I missing?

  76. Sorry for making these mistakes , we’ll I purchased roku3 and I want to watch arabic channels , what shall I do . Thanks in advance

  77. Hi
Is it possible to watch the english premier league on Roku and if yes how? Also, with the VPN how can i set up the VPN on my wireless router to get UK channels on my roku.

    1. If you choose UK roku setting, you can get ITV and BBC those two woudl allow for a few games, otherwise try to get a Now TV box

  78. If I go the VPN method and buy a ROKU 3 in Canada and I want to access US channels, do I set up the ROKU account after installing the VPN service? You recommend pure VPN (openVPN)

  79. Hi I live in Argentina and a friend is going to bring me a Roku3 from US. My problem is that the WiFi router I’m using is provided by my internet provider son I can’t get into its configuration to change VPN or anything like that. Do you have any Suggestions? I appreciate very much your help.
    Thank you!

    1. It wont work unless you get a secondary router and plug it into the main router provided by the ISP and then use the secondary router for yoru devices

      1. CAN YOU RECOMMEND THE BEST ROUTER BRAND AND MODEL TO USE AS SECONDARY ROUTER TO THE OTHER DEVICES????
        THANKS IN ADVANCE

  80. I am in the UK. I have just purchased a second Cisco router (with Tomato 1.28 firmware). I have configured the router with Locator DNS. I would like to use the wireless on this router for my (US purchased) Roku 2. I have signed up for locator and I now have a US Roku account. Do I connect the Cisco router to my existing router, or connect the Cisco router to my ADSL and connect my existing router to that via eithernet? I have a Samsung Smart TV and other devices, so do not want to disrupt the current UK services I have on those devices.

    1. Try Roku <--> Cisco <--> Existing Router <--> DSL, you could also try Cisco directly to DSL,as I know that Unlocator do for a fact bypass local sites so that they dont get affected. I.e. if you are in UK you dont use Unlocator to access local UK sites.

  81. santiago romero

I am located in Mexico, I do have the ROKU3 and I want to access American Netflx, Sky fron the UK
and all the other goodies you mention.
What exactly do I have to buy in order to acces them???

    1. Purchase a DD-WRT or VPN enabled router, get a VPN subscription “Mexico ISPs do use proxies and break Smart DNS Proxies” and set it up on router. But you can only get one location at a time, I.e. either US sites or UK sites at a time.

  82. I live in the UK but would prefer to have the USA channels. Should I buy a UK or USA Roku 3 to set this up? Or does it matter?

I understand the USA version has 1000+ channels and a search function, while the UK version has half the channels and no search function. So I’d prefer the US Roku 3 if it will work following your advice? Thanks for the help!

    1. Both versions are the same, but if you use Roku 3 in USA with a US Roku account you get different channels then if you use it in UK with a UK Roku account. So in short, you need to use one of the two methods above to create a US Roku account and then send all Roku traffic through US.

  83. so i just need to register account using america vpn/dsn, then i can use roku from anywhere in the world while keep seeing america channel without using vpn/dns again? im from indonesia

  84. Thanks for this great site! I am wondering if you do any sort of consultant stuff or actual initial set up for tech illiterate people such as myself. I am in the Greater Toronto area?

    1. Thanks ! Unfortunately not, but Id be glad to help out with a complimentary remote session if you want to.

  85. Also, If you are from a country where the ISP applies transparent proxies and or DNS hijacking. Smart DNS will most likely not work for you
    Which one is it?

    1. Hi Jack
You will be surprised, for example Vodafone in all EU countries applies DNS hijacking, then most ISPs in Singapore and Mexico apply transparent proxies, most of the times you have to try it out to see, there is no harm in that given that Unlocator gives you a 7 day free trial.
      Regards

  86. I’m traveling out side off USA & I like to get Netflix to my kids on the TV, not on my iPad
(It’s work on the iPad) can you give me any suggesting I need ASAP
I have ROKU STICK & SONY BR DVD WITH NETFLIX

    Thanks

    1. Hi
Both Roku and the Sony device will need a router to get it to work, either by forcing SmartDNS in router, or by using VPN on router. Search for my article on DNS hijacking for more info.
      Regards

  87. Ok can you please tell me the great channels you can get for free please for example is A and E free? and cause I am in the uk if I wanted to subscribe to time warner cable on the roku can I do it using a credit card registered to me in the uk? cause I now know how to get the US channels on the roku thanks to you bro

  88. Can I get the US channels by just using the unlocator service now or do I still have to follow all the other steps also? Cause the unlocator service is all anyone needs I think but I may be wrong

    1. Hi
Some are paid such as Netflix while other provide free content and paid content such as Hulu Plus. It is a mix and match. WWE Network for example is paid again.
      Regards

  89. What if I am in the U.S. and set up my Roku account. Now I travel to another country – let’s say Vietnam and check into a hotel with an HD TV that has an HDMI port. Can I watch my Roku channels like Amazon, Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO GO, etc? The info above seems to indicate I’d need to configure my router, but in a hotel I don’t really have that option. Any ideas? Thanks

    1. True, note though that even with an Apple TV or otherwise this wont work. Hotel networks are very restrictive and limited so Smart DNS is almost always going to fail in hotels, your best choice is VPN set it up on your Mac/Pc and plug hdmi cable from PC to TV.

    1. Out of my head BBC Iplayer is free, ITV is free, Hulu provides free episodes so does FOX, there are quite a good number that provide free content.

  90. Hello there…
Even VPN service provides are blocked from where I am. May I know what should I do next please…

  91. Roku doesn’t work even though all my other devices stream neflix and pandora just fine using unblock us programmed in my router. Any more advice? I’m ready to return the roku
    .

  92. H! I am a complete illiterate in tech stuff, but what I am wondering if there is a way to buy a Roku 3 , use it here in USA, and get for free channels as History channel, Animal planet, Disney Channel, Cartoon Network and Dishworld.

    1. Hi
Refer to the info above, you do HAVE to be appearing form a US location before creating the account. One word of warning though is not to use your paypal account if you plan to rent movies when asked for a payment method. If you simply want to use Netflix that should not be an issue though.
      Regards
