How to Bypass Geo-Restrictions and Location Errors

The World Wide Web is an interesting place, making everything much easier to obtain. However, with convenience come limitations in the form of geo-restrictions. In some cases, trying to purchase an item or service online or stream a movie gets an error stating that your geographic location doesn’t allow such action.

Bypass Geo Restrictions and Location Errors

Everyone can experience the same problem as most services/websites apply geo-blocking, which limits access based on your physical whereabouts.

Spoofing location your location using Fake GPS apps will get you nowhere. But there are alternative methods to bypass such geo-issues (It’s a cool name).

Now, you may be asking: What are geo-restrictions and Location errors? How common are these practices nowadays? And how is it possible to get around geolocation blocks? Find out in this comprehensive guide.

Bypass Geo-Restrictions – Quick Guide

Time needed: 4 minutes

Bypassing geo-restrictions is a simple task. All you have to do is follow the steps below and you’ll be accessing anything online, anywhere:

Log in with your username and password.

  4. Open the VPN’s server list.

Connect to a server in the country where your blocked content is available.

  5. Launch your service or website.

Make sure you already got the required IP address by checking this IP Verifier.

  6. Enjoy your internet without limitations.

Access any website, channel, or e-shop wherever you are.

Circumvent Geo-Blocking – Full Guide

You can easily bypass regional restrictions by following the steps above. However, to better understand the problem, we’ve conducted thorough research in hopes of providing you with more information about the matter. Give it a quick read:

The Requirements

To avoid geo-location errors and access whatever blocked website/service you want in your region, you’ll first need all of the following:

  • A VPN subscription.
  • A connection to a VPN server in a preferred country.
  • Your channel’s app or a browser for any website.

What is Geo-blocking?

Geo-blocking is a way for content providers to restrict access to their services on a geographical basis. This is mainly because of licensing regulations.

Every channel or provider pays a huge amount of money to secure the rights of certain content in the country. Therefore, they enforce such restrictions to secure their content from being viewed abroad.

When you subscribe to an internet service, your ISP provides you with an IP address. Every device connected to the internet holds a specific IP that helps determine the device’s location.

Once you access a website, it’s able to determine your current whereabouts by examining your IP address first. If you hold one that’s not valid to the webpage you’re visiting, you’ll receive a message stating that this content is not available in your region.

A perfect example of regional restrictions comes with US Netflix. Wherever you may be outside the US, you’ll be redirected to the content library assigned in your region rather than the American one, again, based on your IP address.

Bypass Geo Restriction Errors – The basics

You seriously don’t know how big streaming is around the world. Youtube alone has more than 2 billion viewers a month. No scratch that, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy accounted for more than 3 billion minutes, along with other TV shows that stole the spotlight.

As mentioned, geo-restrictions can be a hassle, especially for those who like to watch content online. We know that you’ve encountered the problem before, but we’re here to shed more light on the matter.

Here are some common geo-errors you might come across when trying to watch a channel that is not available in your region.

  • Hulu: “This video is not available to watch in your current location. Please select something else to watch. Error code: BYA-403-013”
    Hulu Error Message
  • HBO Max: “HBO Max is currently only supported in the U.S. and certain U.S. territories.”
    HBO Max Error 2
  • BBC iPlayer: “This content is not available in your location. BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Sorry, it’s due to rights issues.”
    BBC iPlayer Updated Error
  • TenPlay: “10Play is available for Australian residents only.”
    TenPlay Error Message
  • Showmax: “Showmax is not yet available in (Your Country).”
    Showmax Error
  • Disney+: “Service Unavailable. Disney+ is unavailable at your location.”
    Disney Error Smart TV
  • TVNZ: “Whoops! Looks like you’re trying to watch from outside of New Zealand. Our videos are only available to watch within New Zealand due to rights issues.”
    TVNZ Error
  • Amazon Prime Video: “Traveling? Prime Video may look a little different while you’re out of town. Not to worry though, everything will be right where you left it when you return.”
  • ITV:Sorry! We’ve detected that you’re outside of the UK. Live TV and Catch Up are only available for viewing in the UK, as of December 31st, 2020.”
    ITV Error New

As you can see, the channels present you with different error messages if you try to access them outside their coverage area. However, regardless of the variety of errors, the results are the same. No viewing abroad.

Well, that’s unless you follow the steps above. Then, and only then, will you be able to bypass geo-restrictions and access the channels wherever you may be!

What a VPN Does!

With a VPN, all your Internet traffic is redirected through a secure remote server when you are using a VPN. This allows you to completely change your IP address and appear to be browsing the web while located in a different region of your choice. Your Internet speed can get negatively affected if you are using cheap, unreliable VPN services.

  • All your traffic is encrypted
  • All your traffic appears from one location chosen. So you can unblock ALL sites for a specific country such as USA or UK
  • Does not work on all devices, unless your router supports VPN.
  • Unlike Smart DNS, local sites that check location will break, as you now appear to be coming from the VPN server country.
  • VPN will actively spoof your IP. Your location and online IP will change for all sites and services that you visit online.
  • Your ISP does not know the final destination of your traffic and it can’t interfere with your traffic. As a result of Transparent proxies, DNS Hijacking, Sniffing, and Eavesdropping by ISPs otherwise won’t work.

In addition to bypassing regional restrictions, you can protect your devices with ExpressVPNIt offers military-grade security protocols for subscribers. If you want to know more, below is a list of VPN providers, tested and assessed based on speed, reliability, and support quality.

Best VPNs for Circumventing Geo-restrictions

You may find a lot of VPN providers while searching for a credible one to use. However, you shouldn’t trust all that you come across along the way. People usually are tempted by free stuff. Well, in the VPN industry, that’s exactly what you need to avoid.

First, their servers are poorly invested and they’re very slow. Second, these free services have a habit of selling your data to sister companies in exchange for revenue. In other words, free VPNs are a big “No”.

I’ve tested out some of the top VPNs everybody’s talking about on the internet. Here’s what I think about the best VPNs to work around geo-restrictions.

NordVPN is another very reliable service that you can turn to if you’re sick of being blocked all the time. Not only does it offer 5000+ servers in 62 countries, but it also excels when it comes to security features.

You can use their double VPN service for an extra layer of protection above the basic encryption your get. You’ll be rerouting your internet traffic through two servers instead of one, which means you’ll be doubling your level of protection.

For more security, NordVPN provides you with a technology called CyberSec. This one will guard your device against viruses, malware, and malicious software that might target you.

Subscribers will be able to have up to 6 simultaneous connections per account and can use its Smart DNS service – Smart Play. Their application is pretty easy to use. You don’t have to be tech-savvy to navigate at all. If you want to know more, take a look at our NordVPN Review.

Pros

  • CyberSec technology.
  • 5000+ servers in more than 62 countries.
  • Smart DNS available.
  • No logs policy.
  • 24/7 award-winning VPN support.

Cons

  • Inconsistant speeds.

Smart DNS Proxy to Bypass Geo-Restrictions

Smart DNS proxies only partially redirect your Internet traffic. In simple terms, only the URLs which reveal your location to the streaming service you wish to unblock are affected.

The rest of your Internet connection remains untouched. This approach has both its benefits and disadvantages.

For one, you only get to unblock the channels the Smart DNS proxy service you are using supports. On the other hand, you will not notice a change in your Internet speed. Here’s a list of Smart DNS pros and cons.

  1. You only need to change the DNS setting on your router
  2. Your traffic is not all encrypted, so traffic is not anonymous.
  3. You gain more speed as not all traffic has to go to the remote VPN server. This also means that not all of your traffic is spoofed.
  4. You can change Netflix regions using a drop-down box if your DNS Proxy provider supports it.
  5. Make sure the site or channel you want to unblock is supported by the Smart DNS proxy you choose.
  6. All your devices are supported Apple TV, Roku, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android, Windows, Kindle Fire, LG, OS x, Panasonic, Amazon Fire Stick, Smart TV, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Roku, Samsung, Sony, Ubuntu, WD TV, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows. See Video and Picture guides for setup here.
  7. If your ISP applies DNS Hijacking and/or Transparent Proxies. Smart DNS Proxies won’t work for you.

While all the VPNs above are quite reliable when it comes to providing Smart DNS, Unlocator happens to be the only service to offer a generous 7-day free trial.

Not only that, but if bypassing restrictions is all that you care about, their stand-alone Smart DNS subscription might pique your interest.

It is up to you to choose which solution you think is more appropriate. Either VPN or Smart DNS Proxies will help you overcome geo-restrictions and protect your privacy.

If you want a fast and easy solution to stream your favorite movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BBC Iplayer, and Hulu use Smart DNS.

If you want to be fully protected from intruders and do not care about a small speed hit and the limit of supported devices use a VPN to bypass geo-restrictions and protect your traffic at the same time.

Here’s an addition to the list of streaming providers that makes use of geo-restrictions:

    CuriosityStream

Specifically, a subset of their content is subject to this sort of restriction and gives the following verbatim message:

“This video is not currently available in your country”

  2. Hallo
Ik wil graag super channel canada kijken in Nederland Het is hier in Nederland niet beschikbaar Hoe los ik dat op Om het toch te kunnen zien Hoe omzeil ik deze blokkade PLAYER_ERR_GEO_RESTRICTED ???

  3. It’s not just the VPN to take into consideration, while Netflix works seemlessly for me using ExpressVPN Amazon Prime does not, that is because the iPad app checks your account (whether you have a US, UK etc.) and uses that to determine whether you can play the US content. So if your account is outside the US no VPN is going to help you bypass that, the minute you sign in with a non US account you are screwed.

  4. Many VPNs bypass geo-restrictions, but not all of them are working in China or streaming US Netflix is not possible and here’s where industry leading providers have advantages over smaller ones. When taking into consideration that a price gap is the same or even lower in some cases like Nordvpn that has a solid reputation why would you choose something else?

  5. You should look into VPN newbies such as Surfshark, SpyOFF or VPNHub. They all seem to be working with streaming services. Is it because they are still new and/or their server number is suited for the number of users they have at the moment? All of them seem to be working with services you’ve mentioned in the article.

  6. I have NordVPN and IPVanish both say they cannot do anything about geo location and now I can’t watch shows I want to see like MasterChef Australia on TenPlay. Any ideas?

    1. The site claims to be a guru. Not true. Very few VPN,s are working for Amazon prime. This site is also not up to date

      1. Charles Roswell

Hello Moisheh. Could you kindly let us know which VPNs you have tried using to access Amazon Prime?

        1. Carlton Abbott

I think almost none of the vpn services worked with Amazon before. I have a Nordvpn subscription, and it was a struggle to find some working servers, but I heard that they fixed this issue last week and now it should work like a dream. Will be testing this out.

  7. Hi there,
Would this work with Hulu Live? I ask as I was using SmartDNS just fine until yesterday when Hulu updated the Apple TV Hulu app. Now I cannot access Hulu Live, but can watch thier regular streaming service. I think I read that they are using Apple TVs location service, so if that is switched off it cannot work.

    Would ExpressVPN circumnavigate this?

    Thank you

  8. How do BBC and Sky (etc) identify Geo Blockers? Is it simply by the volume of connections from one IP address or are they doing something more sophisticated?

      1. How do they identify VPN server IP addresses? This cant be public information (I guess). I also doubt that the VPN companies voluntarily submit their IP addresses. My feeling was that it had to be by volume all traffic from an IP address that would indicate its not a private user. Unless they have something more sophisticated.

        1. Charles Roswell

There are several ways they could probably use to identify whether the IP address belongs to a VPN server or not. As you’ve already mentioned, they could monitor the amount of traffic coming from each IP address. If there are huge amount of data being transferred using a single IP, They can then perform a WHOIS test and in case the IP address does belong to a VPN server, they blacklist the whole range of that IP address.

      1. Charles Roswell

Hi. If HideMe offer several UK VPN server locations and you’re unable to unblock BBC iPlayer using any of them, then the only fix would be signing up with a VPN service that actually still works with iPlayer such as ExpressVPN or BulletVPN.

  9. I can’t find a solution to a problem, maybe someone can help.

There are certain apps, like the new DirecTV Now App, on the ATV 4 that require access to the location services of the ATV. You must allow the App to access the location services or else you can’t stream its content. When you allow access you’re unable to use the app because the app discovers your true location. So far I’ve found no VPN or Smart DNS service that can overcome this issue.

How can I spoof the Apple TV’s Location Services? Is it possible?

      1. Actually, yes I did solve this.
I use an ASUS RT-AC87U Router flashed with ASUS-WRT Merlin firmware.

I setup an OpenVPN client with a particular VPN service and when I tried viewing content from ATV 4 apps that were geo-blocked and required access to the ATV 4’s Location Services I couldn’t view the content (example: DirecTV Now).

However, when I set up an OpenVPN Client with a TorGuard dedicated IP address (which you can use to view Netflix and HULU with) I was able to over come the issue. When the DirecTV Now app requests access to Location Services the Apple TV’s location is spoofed.

It may not make any difference at all but I have the ATV 4’s region set to the US, time set to a US region, and I’m signed into the US App store (with my US apple ID).

The funny thing is I don’t use the DirecTV Now App, I just wanted to see if I could get around the Geo restriction.

And as someone else has pointed out you can use a browser while using a smartDNS service or a compatible VPN service to view DirecTV Now.

Btw I have no affiliation to TorGuard, I’m just a VPN enthusiast. I use AirVPN, CryptoStorm, TorGuard, VPN Unlimited, AnonVPN, & ExpressVPN. Depending on your needs they’re all good services.

    1. Has anyone tried streaming Directv Now to a laptop using Smart DNS and/or VPN? I can watch Directv on my laptop which does not have GPS capability. So I thought that it might be possible, when traveling, to spoof location on the laptop using a Smart DNS or VPN service.

  10. I am trying the 7 day trial of expressVPN and was hoping to be able to access content in the U.S starting with Amazon prime video and if that worked all good I would of ended up signing up for another Netflix account but in the U.S this time as the Canadian version lacks major content anyhow I installed the VPN and it logs in fine I’m pretty sure even my ping is good due to being not to far from Seattle I even went on Google and tried seeing what other sites are seeing for my information and it looks to be working saying I’m in the U.S but no matter what I do restarting apps and phone Amazon prime video runs a error soon as it goes to stream TV show I also signed up for a free trial with Amazon for 30 days and set all my info to match my U.S location I was going to think I might still be doing something wrong until I stumbled upon this thread and read Amazon and Netflix are both no longer accessible by using this VPN trick of spoofing my location SO I guess all mess around with VPN app for my 7 day trial and if I can’t get it to do what it says it can all just have to cancel subscription and go back to the old school way by downloading torrents regardless of what the risk is if I get extradited to America for watching TV shows that I can’t get with my local television companies then so be it LOl what can I say I’m a thrill seeker I have been downloading torrents till this day but I just don’t go crazy and only get shows I really like for example the game of thrones it should be on Netflix but it’s not Canadian Netflix is crap so I even looked into buying the game of thrones seasons until I seen the price with prices like that of course people are going to pirate the season’s greety bastards and plus I haven’t heard anything about any Canadians getting fined or charged or jailed so all do what I have to as I’m a disabled loner with animals for friends and TV and movies to keep me from hanging myself from my balcony SO PLEASE help me figure out how to access sites in America then I will pay a monthly payment to have protection on my PC and phone and router if necessary for streaming through my smart TV I watch Netflix on TV as it comes with YouTube and Netflix and I have a Canadian subscription so if I could spoof myself to America I should be able to stream it right through TV but I’m not sure if I even have a router so all worry about getting the phone or PC to connect first well time to browse for a fix and all check back here time to time . Cheers

    1. Hi Roberto. You don’t really need to sign up for a second American Netflix account. You can use VPN + your Canadian Netflix account to get Netflix USA in Canada. If the current setup isn’t working for you, you should get in touch with ExpressVPN support. They surely will fix any issues you’re facing.

      1. Thanks I have and it’s been sorted out how do I remove my post ? Figured I would after finding a solution but I don’t see any opinions to delete it ?

  11. Did you find things broke this past week? I’ve been using a VPN (Private Internet Access) which has been working fine. But as of a few days ago Amazon Prime now refuses to stream because of geographic restrictions (I’m in Canada). I haven’t been able to find a way around it including trying to change my DNS settings

  12. Just tried geolocation bypass with unlocator on netflix and it did nota work. Netflix prompted warning recognizing the use of the DNS.

  13. I am a U.S. military member and I live in Belgium. I have Proximus as my ISP. I currently use a VPN on my computer, which allows me to stream my Amazon Prime content. However, I purchased a Samsung Smart TV (F-series). I purchased it at the base PX, however, when I go in to the settings and try to change the IP address, I don’t have that option. That line is greyed out. Is this a hardware issue with the TV, or the connection from my ISP blocking me from doing that? Is there a work around?
And I have already tried to do the HDMI connection from my computer to tv. Oddly, even with a good HDMI cable, though it plays at a good speed on my computer, it freezes the second I try to link the screen to my TV. Ideas?
I would try to do a VPN modem, but I have read several Belgian blogs that say the B Box 3 (it’s a SAGEM brand) has proprietary software that detects if you are trying to connect to such a device. But oddly, like I said, I am running the ExpressVPN software on my computer no problem.
Any suggestions you have are appreciated.

    1. Hi Betsy. To get VPN to work on a Samsung Smart TV, you have to setup VPN on VPN-compatible router. I am afraid your router does not allow that. You could give Unlocator Smart DNS a try as it can be directly configured on a Smart TV.

    1. You could spoof the location services. But there are two catches. 1- You need to jailbreak and I HIGHLY recommend against that 2- Some apps at least on android wont launch if you have root/jailbreak enabled.

      1. I’m jailbroken. Always have and always will if possible. The tweaks haven’t worked for me. NHL.tv is what I’m trying to get around. I use Unlocator and they updated it to work on everything except iOS.

  14. hi, I am using vyprvpn to appear in Italy and stream Sky Go Italia. I was very happy with this service because of the stability and bandwidth. From middle of December 2015 this VPN is not working anymore and Sky Go can detect that I am not physically in Italy. it works well with other Geo restricted sites (e.g. Netflix or Rai.it), but not with Sky. When I try to search for my IP address I have different answers according to the site I am using. Some say I have an italian IP address and some I have an IP address from a server near London. How could this be possible? Any other related issues was fixed before? TY.

  15. i’m using unotelly and 2 months ago Amazon Prime Video gets my real location and on Netflix can only use the Canada site. Before I could switch between USA and Canada Netflix sites. Any idea what is going on? Unotelly apparently doesn’t know.
I tried for free Unlocator and Amazon Prime Video with my USA credit card is still now working. :(:(

  16. Jacques Saumur

I have been using Hide My Ass for a few years and it works perfectly. However, I just installed Playon and tried to access Hulu through it while using HMA, but there’s a message comming up from Hulu and other channels that says I can’t because I’m not from USA. Do you know how to get around that annoyance? It seems Playon isn’t compatible with VPN servers or there’s some kind of programation that I’m missing, even though it is an HMA technician that programmed my router.

      1. Jacques Saumur

They’re useless, I tried and they failed and then they gave up and said though luck when not being sucessfull. Basically, I like the HMA ideas, but since I’ve been with them it’s been the worse customer services ever.

  17. Unfortunately the VPNI solution doesn’t work for Apple TV after the latest software update. It figures out the location, maybe by sniffing local wifi signals.

      1. My setup worked for a year here in China. I have an EdgeRouter connected to StrongVPN and an Asus running tomato in bridge mode to provide wifi signal on the same subnet. All devices, ipad, iPhone, windows phone, laptops, Amazon fire, continue to work. However since September 2014 apps on Apple TV cannot connect. Not only Netflix, but PBS, ABC etc. when time zone is set to automatic it shows Beijing. On any other device what is my IP shows San Fransisco. Either new Apple TV release or Apple servers can now figure out location. Is this only in China? And why only on Apple TV? I can watch Netflix on my iPad and mirror it on Apple TV, but not directly on Apple TV.

  18. A good informative article, but it does not address the issues of the Android system. Even with a VPN in place, the geo location is identified.

    1. As a rule of thumb, no. But certain apps do use GPS to identify location and not network, in that case you need a GPS Location spoofing app in addition to DNS and VPN

      1. Hello
Since few days it became simply IMPOSSIBLE to watch the BBC IPlayer anymore from outside the UK. (and even inside the UK for some people)
        I’m a HMA costumer since 4 years. HMA = A popular VPN
I had to admit that good times sadly ended ! It’s quite tough and disapointing .
The BBC seems to have blacklisted all the HMA’s servers
Furthermore the BBC has also toughed his behavior with all the Iplayer watchers in the UK. Everyone has now to prove that he has paid the annual TV tax, which is quite a lot. more than £140 I believe.
Then it is finished for me, to listen some interesting programs. Dateline London, BBC News, Hard talk (possible through the radio), Documentaries… and also some NEWS programs form the USA
That said I could do it for a certain time and it help me a lot to significantly improve my English. Impossible from now. Too bad.
Through hulu.com, in the USA, I could watch few “Saturday Night Live” show 3 or 4 years ago, but they also BLACKLISTED all the servers of the VPN (HMA) since long time ago. More than one year.
As a result it became totally impossible to access to the videos
THEN, don’t imagine that you’ll be able to access to some catch up TV through a VPN! Absolutely not sure! The opposite. Be aware of that. We unfortunately cannot trust anymore the promises of the VPN on that point from now.

        P from France

        1. Hello there. Sorry to hear about all your trouble with HideMyAss. You have two choices to get BBC iPlayer outside UK. You can switch over to ExpressVPN, which are probably the best VPN providers at the moment, or drop VPN all together and use Smart DNS instead.
