Forget about Game of Thrones this April. The actual streaming war is set to begin when Apple launches its new streaming service. The company’s plans to take on Netflix, Hulu, and the other streaming giants have almost materialized. Apple TV+ is its name and it will accompany Apple TV and its roster of other devices. Although not much is there to go on, here’s all we know so far.
What is Apple TV+
Apple TV+ – The Release
There have been talks that the service will launch in Autumn. This means that you can expect an official release during the months of September and October.
On March 25th, Apple held an event that gave us a glimpse at what the service is all about. The launching ceremony featured dozens of Hollywood royalty. We saw the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Garner, Reece Witherspoon, and so many more. Well, if these stars attended Apple’s launching event, then you might guess that they’ve also been enlisted to help Apple create its own content.
The service is going big upon release. Apple TV+ will launch in Autumn 2019 in over 100 different countries. It will be available on a plethora of devices including the rival’s platforms, Samsung. You’ll be able to stream on all Apple mobile devices and computers, as well as Smart TVs from providers such as Samsung, LG, It will also be available via Roku and Amazon’s Fire TV Stick.
OK! But What is Apple TV+?
In 2019, Apple devices won’t be the company’s biggest innovations. Instead, we’ll be looking forward to seeing the new services that run on them.
As you may know, iPhones aren’t at the top of their game lately. Therefore, Apple switched to enhancing the software and services in order to lure users in. Much like Apple Music, the new video service is on the list of what Apple is about to offer, and wait for it, yeah, exclusively on their devices.
Apple is apparently spending billions making its own TV shows for distribution via the Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad. Rumor has it, the project at hand cost Apple over 4.2 billion dollars on original programming by 2022, including 1 billion back in 2018. That’s because the company is working hard on producing exclusive content featuring high-profile stars, directors, writers, and producers. So, I guess that’s the price to pay.
Despite spending that much money on its new service, that’s still smaller than what Netflix’s budget looks like. Moreover, Amazon has been in talks of producing the new Lord of the Rings series. You can tell how much that will cost them. Yeah! If you know your numbers, Netflix is spending more than 6.8 billion dollars, while Amazon is expected to pay a bit over 8.
The most frustrating thing about this is that we still don’t know the subscription format. Will it be free for all Apple users? I don’t think so. Tim Cook wants everyone to look at Apple differently, as hard as that may be. He needs a service that rivals the giants in the industry and in essence, a simple subscription of 8$ may be the price to pay. We’ll just have to wait and see.
What to Expect?
As I mentioned above, award-winning actors and actresses along with high-profile directors are set to join the creative teams. Once Apple launches the new streaming service, I guarantee that you’ll witness originality and prestige in their shows.
According to Eddy Cue: “We’re honored that the absolute best lineup of storytellers in the world — both in front of and behind the camera — is coming to Apple TV+.”
Ever heard Carol Trussel? She’s the one behind the likes of Narcos, Hannibal, and even True Blood. Well, Apple signed her in their project. You can now tell what to expect as a start.
Wait there’s more. No matter how much the company tries to lay low on info, some words will leak out eventually. And guess what? It did. Apple was unable to keep rumors and snippets from spreading and we already know a bit of what they’re working on.
Did you know that Apple has already produced to original shows – Carpool Karaoke and Planet of the Apps? Well, neither have I. The two shows are not that popular yet you can stream them on Apple Music for a £9.99 monthly subscription.
Luckily the new shows are in a different league than these two. If the release is in the Fall, then it must have what it takes to go head to head with what Netflix has in store for 2019.
Now, without further ado, here’s a glimpse of some of the new shows that Apple is working on:
On the Rocks
Apple is kicking off by signing Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray in this new original. The film will tell the story of a young mother who re-connects with her playboy father on an adventure through New York. Bill Murray, of course, will take on the role of the father and he will be co-starring with the one and only Rashida Jones as the mother.
This won’t be the first time that Coppola and Murray team up. We’ve seen what Lost in Translation is all about. Now it’s time for a new movie but with Apple as a production company.
Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the Peanuts Gang
Who doesn’t love Snoopy? Apparently, Apple adores the character as they went into a bidding war to get a hold of the cartoon. The company won the bid and got to produce a future project for the Peanuts.
- Calls (TV Series)
- See (Sci-Fi Drama)
- Ed Sheeran (Documentary)
- TBA Cartoon Saloon Project
- Little Voice (Dramedy)
- Defending Jacob
- The Elephant Queen
Apple is still in talks with other companies to be able to show their originals on its streaming platform. The company is going through this step to make its service the all mighty one-stop place for all needed content worldwide. It already partnered with broadcasters such as HBO, Showtime, Starz and Amazon Prime Video, aiming to act as a gateway to their content through bundled subscriptions known as Apple TV Channels.
However, we don’t know how the deals are going to be especially depending on the country. For example, Sky is in deals with HBO and Showtime in the UK, so making deals with Apple TV+ is kind of difficult at the moment in the country.
Apple TV+ vs. The World
Apple is joining the streaming market at times stacked with head to head competition. With Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and other streaming giants around, this newcomer will have a lot to prove upon release. Not to mention that Disney and WarnerMedia will be launching streaming services as well later this year. Maybe in the Fall as well. Another media titan, NBCUniversal, is going all out with its streaming service next year. So, we can tell that Apple TV+ has a lot of competition when it debuts.
We’re stuck in a dilemma. Apple is new to the streaming business. The other companies have what it takes to bring in subscribers due to their already existing vast content library. However, we don’t want to forget that Apple has the technical know-how no? Oh, didn’t I mention that it already has a massive audience of 1.4 billion users? What do you think? Can it pull it off? Do you think that Apple’s new project will be one of the best streaming services of 2019? We can’t tell yet, but it will make an impact for sure.
According to Apple’s Senior Vice-President Eddy Cue: “Apple plans is to produce a small number of quality shows rather than focus on quantity.” We all hope Apple TV+ lives up to everybody’s expectations. I’m more than excited to see what Apple has in store come Fall 2019. By the end of the day, it’s still Apple we’re talking about. So, premium content comes with a “Satisfaction Guaranteed” label.
