Netflix Proxy Error Fix – Best 4 VPN Workarounds

The Netflix Proxy Error is being detected and shown more than ever before. If you are using VPN or Smart DNS proxies to unblock different Netflix regions, chances are you already came across the following Netflix proxy error (netflix.com/proxy). “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.” Back in 2016, Netflix announced that “those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are.” You don’t need to panic. Both ExpressVPN and BulletVPN still do support changing Netflix regions on Android, iPhone, iPad, Smart TV, Apple TV, PC, Mac, Roku, Fire TV Stick, Chromecast, PS3, PS4, and Xbox. I will discuss both methods in detail in this help article.

Netflix Proxy Error (netflix.com/proxy) Detected

At the beginning of February 2016, Netflix users who used VPN or Smart DNS to unblock American Netflix outside the USA started to get the infamous Netflix proxy error. “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.”  There are two workarounds for the Netflix proxy error. You can simply stop using VPN/Smart DNS and watch your local Netflix region. On the other hand, you can subscribe to a VPN that still allows you to change Netflix regions.

How Does Netflix Detect I am using VPN?

In essence, Netflix simply blacklists IP addresses that belong to VPN servers. When you connect to a blacklisted VPN server while trying to watch a movie or TV show on Netflix USA, you will be presented with a proxy error message. This is mainly because you appear to be browsing the web using the IP address that Netflix has already blacklisted.

With that being said, there are actually still some VPN providers that allow you to watch American Netflix abroad. Take a look at the list below.

Important Notice: As of September 2nd, 2019, I have tested ExpressVPN and can confirm that it still works. If you are receiving the following Netflix proxy error (netflix.com/proxy). “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.” use ExpressVPN to unblock US Netflix again.

How to Fix Netflix Proxy Error with VPN

First of all, if your VPN or Smart DNS proxy service provider has stopped supporting Netflix, the only thing you can do is sign up with a VPN that still works with Netflix. Check the list of working VPNs below. I constantly test these VPNs to verify they are still working. In case any of them do not work with Netflix any longer, I will remove them from the list. In some cases, some American VPN servers work while others don’t. Try connecting to a different US server if you get the Netflix proxy error, or contact your VPN’s support to get info on which servers are still working.

Follow these steps to fix the Netflix proxy error.

  1. Sign up with a VPN provider.
  2. Download and install the VPN application on your PC, Mac, Android, iOS device.
  3. Launch the VPN application and sign in using your VPN account.
  4. Now, connect to an American VPN server.
  5. Finally, go to the Netflix website or launch the Netflix application.
  6. You have successfully bypassed the Netflix proxy error and can now access American Netflix again.

ExpressVPN also provide their users with Smart DNS proxies that work on PS3, PS4, Xbox, FireTV, Roku, Smart TV, and routers. These devices do not have VPN clients. Therefore, you cannot install VPN directly on them. A Smart DNS proxy enables you to fix that issue.

VyprVPN – Netflix Proxy Error Workaround 2020

"<yoastmark

30-Day Money-Back Guarantee

Unfortunately, VyprVPN failed to support unblocking American Netflix for much of 2016. However, we’ve lately given their US VPN servers a second try, and to our surprise, we were able to watch US Netflix abroad again. They would definitely be higher on our list of the top 4 Netflix VPNs in 2020 if it wasn’t for the fact it took them so long to find a Netflix proxy error workaround.

Pros:

  • Very fast VPN servers.
  • VPN servers in 36 countries.
  • Chameleon.

Cons:

  • No torrents.

NordVPN’s VPN applications for iPhone, iPad, Android, PC, and Mac are possibly the easiest and most friendly I have used. Setting them up takes a couple of minutes. From there on in, you simply launch the app and connect to a VPN server of your choice. It’s safe to say that a lot of effort went into creating these apps. Like ExpressVPN, NordVPN offer a 30-day refund period, more than enough time to fully test their VPN server.

Pros:

  • 30-day refund period.
  • Great VPN apps.
  • VPN servers in around 57 countries.
  • Double VPN.

Cons:

  • While most VPN servers we’ve tried were impressively fast, a couple were relatively slow.

VPN and Smart DNS Proxy Services Not Working with Netflix

Please note that the list below is based on personal findings. Some might be able to unblock American Netflix using one Smart DNS service but not another. If you have tested any of the Smart DNS providers listed below, please share your finding by leaving a comment below. In some cases, a Smart DNS provider might allow you to unblock American Netflix on one streaming device but not on another i.e. you might be able to watch US Netflix on your PC/Mac but not on your iPhone for example. In other instances, you might be able to unblock one Netflix region but not another.

ExpressVPN Netflix Not Working For You?

We sometimes do receive comments from some users who state that ExpressVPN is not working with Netflix USA for them. If you do face similar problems, try connecting to a different American VPN server from within the ExpressVPN app. You can also get in touch with ExpressVPN support and ask them about the servers which will allow you to get American Netflix outside the USA. Either way, you should still be able to fix the Netflix proxy error using ExpressVPN. And just in case it doesn’t work for you for whatever reason, you can always get your money back thanks to their 30-day refund guarantee.

Netflix Proxy Error Detected? Fix using VPN or Smart DNS Proxy

  2. We are successfully using ExpressVPN with our Fire Stick and unblocking American netflix. However, last night we got the proxy error message stating Netflix noticed we were using a proxy server. We switched from Dallas to Miami and then back to Dallas again…without any luck. Then we disabled the VPN and the series ran. Not sure what happened, perhaps the show was able to run in Mexico without a proxy??

  3. Dont use VPN , only last 2 days had problems same error vpn proxy.
never had problem using it in UK or abroad for last 2 years
will be cancelling if not sorted soon i am not paying for VPN>

  4. I am using PureVPN. Works quite well for streaming US Netflix in UK. I use their chrome extension and android app.

  5. my netflix is not working from so much tym, there is a message u seems to be using unblocker or proxy, plese help me out

    1. Hey, what VPN do you use? It looks like Netflix knows that you’re trying to cheat. I don’t know, I use NordVPN, and it works pretty decently with Netflix. I think you should contact your provider’s customer support, maybe they could tell you which servers are newer and could work better. Good luck.

  6. Using ExpressVPN and it often gets the “unblocker” message with NetFlix.
Occasionally restarting the VPN helps (I assume if you get an address in a range that hasn’t been blocked yet, but this often takes many tries). Express VPN need to up their game if they want to keep claiming it works with US Netflix.

  7. Netflix has begun to combat VPN users
and they are starting to actively block some VPN services. Services with
smaller networks and those that have a high number of free users are more likely to be
blocked by Netflix. In order to get around these blocks, you must select a service that
proactively works at getting around georestrictions and has a network on the cutting edge of technology.

  8. VPN works.

Only on mobile (iOS or Android) but if you can AirPlay or Chromecast then all good.

It works well with slow wifi – I get better streaming AirPlaying US Netflix with Wangle on than I do watching Australian Netflix directly through Apple TV. Go figure…

  9. March 29 2017. Has anyone noticed that SKY+ Catch Up now seems to be blocking some VPN servers. In the past SKY didn’t seem bothered, unlike BBC iPlayer or Netflix for example, but now they seem to be taking action. Has anyone else been affected by this? active.

    1. Yeah, we have had many reports by users from various VPN providers, from the VPN providers we audit, ExpressVPN got it back to work after a couple of days. If you know of other providers that work with Sky please let us now.

      1. The VPN provider we were using found all their servers throughout the UK blocked. I did find one that was still OK, but how long that will last is a big question. My advise to anyone is don’t take a long contract with a VPN provider, once SKY has found their IP address they will be blocked. I am just taking a month at a time until this settles. Someone has to come up with a better solution to beating the blocking, floating IP addresses?

  10. As of Feb 13, 2017, 0815 UTC, ExpressVPN is NOT working to connect to Netflix USA from Canada using a Windows based laptop or desktop. It is possible to login to Netflix USA, but when you click on the film or show you want to watch, the red circle swirls in the middle and then produces the following error message:

    Whoops, something went wrong…
    Streaming error.
You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.

    Error Code: M7111-1331-5059

Time to look for another VPN company or solution.

    1. Hi AJ. In some cases, connecting to a specific American VPN server does result in a proxy error message when trying to watch Netflix USA. I suggest either you try to connect to a different US VPN server, or get in touch with ExpressVPN support. Let me know how it goes.

  11. i just purchased express vpn, to connect to the USA netflix, followed all the instructions, and it returns me the same error. I am unable to connect to the service. I guess since Feb 6th to now, it stopped working.

    1. Hi Adrian, I am using ExpressVPN at the moment to watch a US based show, please contact their support they will let you know which USA server is working for Netflix, I cant state it here I am afraid.

  12. It might come as a surprise to the editor, but many people are NOT interested in the US Netflix. For many (most?) it is more useful for language or family reasons to watch different European local Netflix country-versions. So far NONE of the recommended VPN-providers are then useful for bypassing the proxy-blockage. Or am I wrong? Could be worth to point out that when reviewing VPN-site.

    1. Jock Walker-Campbell

ExpressVPN – paid for it – but still gets same blocked message from Netflix. . .
“You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again. For more help, visit netflix.com/proxy.”

    2. I completely agree with you, Pavel. I like US netflix, but I;’m mostly intested in Netflix movie selections I have seen in Netflix both in Europe and South America. I have tried a few VPN services unsuccessfully.

  13. Thank you, Isso for the awesome article, but before I start my reply regards the Netflix Proxy Error. I want to shade the light at my personal experience regard SmartDNS. First of all, I have a year membership with Unlocator. Before I settled with them, I have tried 4 SmartDNS providers, one of them is Unlocator. The reason I decided to go with them is due to the fast charge speed connection; I set their SmartDNS in my 4K smart TV; and as soon as you click a 4K TV show, it takes 30 seconds to stream 4k content in its full glory. Other SmartDNS providers have not had that speed and performance. But unfortunately, even Unlocator still struggle with NetFlix, They have tried many ways, they even posted a beta DNS number which worked for few days and got busted as well. My membership will expire in three months, and it has been un-positively to attempt trying to login Netflix with the proxy error. The Rest work fine with Unlocator Amazon TV, Hulu, and others channels all work fine.

    1. Hi. Out of the VPN services we have tested, ExpressVPN was the only one that was consistently able to unblock American Netflix outside USA.

    1. Cher, I am in Thailand and regularly access USA netflix with expressVPN on smart TV’s, macbook, android, windows, etc. I use L2TP and openVPN configured in an Asus router and connect to specific VPN servers.. No problems. You MUST connect to these servers ONLY though or Netflix will be blocked.

  14. I’m going in the opposite direction … want to watch Netflix-UK from the US. I’d had another service that worked for a couple weeks before the dreaded proxy block came up. Anyone having any luck getting to the UK without the issue?

    1. If ExressVPN “still works”, then why am I getting the Proxy error (I just started using ExpressVPN today) while using it?

  15. I am using NordVPN on my PC and still able to access Netflix and until now they seems to be working. They have a feature called “SmartPlay”, when it’s enabled, I can access Netflix regardless the server I use.

  16. The Netflix app on my Apple Tv (4th gen) doesn’t even load anymore with my VPN. Hulu works just fine, but if I have the vpn dns settings, Netflix doesn’t let me log in, citing an issue and to try again later. It doesn’t even let me get to main page and actually play something and get the usual “you’re using a proxy or unblocker” message. I’ve tried deleting and re-downloading the app, and the same thing keeps happening. If I switch to my usual/correct DNS settings it works perfectly. What do you think is the problem?

  17. I have been using unblock for numerous years. I am from Canada and use it for netflix hulu and amazon. We know it will no longer work for netflix but netflix will not even let me watch from my own country if I don’t shut it off. I don’t want to lose the other services. Is there anyway I can not use it for netflix but for Hulu.

    1. Cannot comment on Unblock-Us, as I have not tried them in a while, but Unlocator definitely allows you to access your local Netflix region without losing the ability to unblock other streaming channels including Hulu, Amazon, and HBO Go.

  18. Meggy (@meggyphonic)

I’m in the Philippines and just tried the Unlocator, it’s not working. Getting the proxy error message both in my laptop and apple tv.

Previously, Ironsocket was working here for about a month. Then it stopped.

If anyone has any leads on something that still works…

  19. Hi,

I read your article and sign up for unblocker trial today. I followed the configuration at unblocker setup page. I tried to watch Netflix and I still get the proxy error. Unblocker can’t solve Netflix proxy issue outside of US. Any other suggestion? I don’t want to sign up expressvpn unless I can try for free.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Milly. ExpressVPN is the only working VPN service that I have tried with Netflix at the moment. If you decide to sign up with ExpressVPN, you have the chance to get a refund within 30 days.

  20. Hi Isso, I happen to have an issue:
I don’t get the error you mention here, but… I’m in Spain, I use Hotspot Shield Elite, and although I choose USA as my VPN I keep getting logged into Germany Netflix. If I choose any other country as my VPN I do get to log to the corresponding Netflix region. But for the USA, which is the one I am really most interested in, I don’t seem to find any workaround. Any suggestions?

    Cheers

  21. Hi. I used to use unblock us but I do not use it any more and haven’t for a few months. I am now seing this error but I do not know what to do as I am no longer using unblock us… Any suggestions?

    1. Hello Cathy. Are you getting the Netflix proxy error or are you being redirected to the Unblock-US error page?

      1. I’m having the exact same problem as Cathy… I am getting the message when I try to play a show in Netflix. I too used to use unblockus.com but haven’t since March 2016 when I learned that Netflix would no longer allow that option. I have cancelled my subscription to unblockus, however I’m paid up until Feb. 2017.

I’m in Canada and have had NO problem watching Netflix until 2 days ago (and I watch almost daily). Since then, I keep getting this streaming error message that you’ve shown above.

I have not done anything different than normal. Simply turn on my Samsung Smart TV, select Netflix, and push play… same as always, but now with this message.

I’m only assuming it’s connected to unblockus. My assumption is that it has my region marked as “Canada” but it’s using the proxy to state that, versus turning it off. I tried calling them, 1-602-515-0930, and after being placed on hold as soon as the call was answered, for 5 minutes, a recording came on asking to leave a message, and then said there is no room to leave a message and then disconnected.

I called Netflix 1-877-742-1335 – they were extremely pleasant to speak with. The guy I spoke to saw the same error when he accessed my account and said it’s not on their end, but through our internet provider.

I called our Internet provider and he said that the error is browser based, not anything on their end. He tested his own Netflix account and had no problem.

Which leads me back to my own terminal.

I’ve tried on my Smart TV, iPad, and Macbook Air. No luck on any device.

I don’t want a unblocker or proxy – I want it OFF so I can go back to watching my shows as normal. How do I turn it off??

ANY HELP you can provide would be EXTREMELY APPRECIATED. I don’t know what else to do, or who else to turn to.

        Thank you in advance.

        1. Hi Tracie. The only logical explanation to the issue you are facing is that you either have Unblock-Us DNS server addresses setup on your streaming device or directly on your router. Try setting up Google DNS server addresses on your Mac or Smart TV and see if that resolves the issue. Google’s primary DNS is 8.8.8.8 and the secondary DNS is 8.8.4.4.

        2. Hey Tracie
I’m in Canada and we use unblock us as well, and our Netflix came up with the proxy error around the same time as your post. We ended up just cancelling Netflix. We had our region set to Canada, and live in Canada, but it was just the fact that our DNS was set up period, that Netflix wouldn’t work. We had previously had a problem with the proxy and used the Google solution that was suggested to you, but that no longer works as well. We just cancelled our netflix and basically just watch hulu now. I don’t want to lose my hulu and pandora so that I can watch Netflix, that trade wasn’t worth it to me, so I figured the best option is to cancel netflix, the only way to send the message that they need to stop blocking proxies is to make sure they lose money for doing it.

    1. Hi. That depends on which VPN or Smart DNS proxy service you are using. Some are able to bypass the Netflix ban issue while others do not.

  22. Patricia Lyra (@Pat_Lyra)

I have’t been able to use Netflix, I get the proxy error. I have seen that you posted today that it still works so I am trying to understand what I have to do.
I signed up today to >ExpressVPN – actually because of your post :). Do you have a workaround or tutorial? I have followed the setup guide which is quite straightforward.
    Thank you!!

    1. marissa gordon

Hi Patricia….I’m on the fence about paying for a new vpn service that doesn’t work properly for Netflix. . .so I’m following your post to see if ExpressVpn works out :)

    2. As of the 29th July 2016.I have’t been able to use Netflix, I get the proxy error. I have seen that you posted today that it still works so I am trying to understand what I have to do.

  23. Sorry Man, but I am in the UK and have tried today to access US Netflix using Express VPN and I am getting the error message. I know your latest update says you tested it today, but I am wondering if Netflix have changed something since then.

  24. glyniselliott

I am in Spain had a Neflix UK accoun using Unblockers. We g the ero message so decided to cancel and use Netflik Spain bu because we still have Unblocker they keep taking us back o the UK account which is blocked. Ridiculous.

    1. Hello Glyn. If you’re using Unlocator, you can use the ‘Bypass’ feature in your Unlocator account’s region settings to get your local Netflix region.

  25. I’m using an ASUS RT-N66U router with OpenVPN, does ExpressVPN currently still work using to watch US Netflix from Canada using VPN settings installed on this?

I am using HideMyAss and it no longer works with that method for me so I am currently looking to switch as my VPN expires on July 4th.

Thanks to all those that can help me with an answer!

    Cheers,
    Jer

        1. Hi Kari. Have you tried getting in touch with ExpressVPN support? They should be able to get you up and running.

  26. “those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are.”

This statement is a lie, I live in the US and access only the US servers and Netflix blocks me on both PIA and NordVPN. So they are blocking anyone and everyone on a VPN.

    1. It’s because you still are going through the unblocking service. You need to turn it off completely. If you are using a DNS service then change the DNS to 8.8.8.8 for primary and 8.8.4.4 for secondary. Where you change that depends on if you set it in you router or specific device when you first set up your unblocking service. If VPN then check you VPN service for instructions on turning it off.

  27. Used ExpressVPN for the 1st time just now after reading this page. Didn’t work for me. So changed couple of places, uninstalled and installed. At last it WORKED. Thanks Issac and other guys. I can access Netflix US region from Canada.

    1. Hi,

I still receive the same error message, nothing has changed and that isnafter I tried both methods.

Any suggestions? I am based in the UAE.

        1. So there is no way I can access the USA NF in UAE?
I tried Unlocator and still gave the same error. Any suggestions?

  28. Hi Isso, I’m in Canada and use Express Vpn. I’m all setup with the DNS provided but I find my US Netflix selection is incomplete. I reference Moreflicks and found that certain titles that should be available I n the US are not showing up in my US Netflix selection. Maybe it’s an error on the Moreflicks site but because my selection is kinda lame I feel there might be a chance I’m not getting all the US content. Any experience with this? I’m using Apple TV 3rd gen.

    1. Hi Bry. That is a bit strange. Try searching for a series called ‘Star Crossed’. If you are able to find it and stream it on your Apple TV, it certainly means you are in the US Netflix region given that Star Crossed is not available elsewhere.

      1. Hi Isso, I was able to stream it. Thanks for your help. For some reason it just seems like the proposed movies and tv shows seem outdated and the content seemed limited.

  29. I use Express VPN and it has not been working for me. Is there a location that works that I might not know of?

    1. Contact their support please, I did check and it is working, they will surely provide you with a working location.

      1. What I found odd was the ExpressVPN wasn’t working for me. I was about to get a refund but decided to change location and it now works

  30. Hi, I’ve recently swapped to Optus Cable with a CG3000v2 Cable Modem. I’m trying to run Unlocator to access Netflix US and i’m still receiving the proxy error. It seems that Optus have clamped down on the modem they are providing so that you can’t manually enter DNS addresses on the router or block IP’s as per the Unlocator support page. Have you come across a work around for this kind of situation? I’m thinking that i might have to get another router and run the Optus Cable modem in bridge mode to be able to set DNS addresses and block IP’s.

    1. Hello Tony. What you can do in such case is connect a secondary router that supports changing DNS and setting up static routes to your main router and then make all necessary changes on that secondary router instead. Here’s how it’s done:

      1. Connect the secondary router’s WAN port to the main router’s LAN port using an Ethernet cable.
      2. Configure Unlocator DNS on the secondary router.
      3. Setup the necessary static routes on the secondary router.
      4. Connect your streaming devices to the secondary router to watch American Netflix.

  31. So I do not think Unlocator is working for Netflix any more. Is ExpressVPN still working? I don’t want to go to the trouble of getting Express and find out it’s not working if I can help it.

    1. That’s strange Joseph. I’ve tested Unlocator as well as ExpressVPN just this morning and they both are still working for me.

      1. I have trouble now with unlocator. Will play for a bit than proxy error msg. Switched to beta region and still the same problem. I think Netflix is winning this battle at the moment.

      2. So I think I may have found my problem. I’m in the US and I would like to see Netflix from other countries. Does Unlocator work to do this or does it just work if you are in another country and wish to see American Netflix? That is what I’m getting from your article. I may be wrong…

        1. I did check and it is working, maybe you just need to change the server you use. Please contact their support.

  32. In my case, I wish to access foreign Netflix (mainly UK or latin america) from Puerto Rico, as my local service is USA Netflix. I signed for the trial period of Unlocator and although I’m accessing these regions of Netflix, when I try to watch anything, I get the unblocker/VPN error”.

    Any suggestions for me?

    Thanks!

  33. I got Unblock-Us to work with Netflix (using new dns servers provided thru customer support) with this only bug: Everytime, before you access Netflix, update the region of your choice, if not, you’ll have the proxy message. Proved to work as a charm ’til this afternoon

  34. Hi Isso, when you say you’re able to watch US Netflix, is that with a US Netflix account? I’m asking as I’ve got a UK Netflix account which worked fine with ExpressVPN (in any country) until somewhere in January. Since then I’m just getting the proxy error (as per your article’s image). Do you use some specific settings on ExpressVPN to make it work for you?

    1. Hi it should not matter if you have a US or UK Netflix account. I’d recommend contacting ExpressVPN support. They should be able to help you out.

    1. Hi Adam. You can use either VPN or Smart DNS to unblock NBC Sports Live in England. However, even when using either solution, you still need an American cable subscription to sign into NBC Sports.

  35. Since yesterday no way of using Netflix with unlocator. Every time i tried to watch something I have the proxy error message. On unolcator it s written that they know about it and they are trying to fix but stiLl not working, so frustrated….

  36. I’m using Unlocator as well and have continued to get a proxy error (“This title is not available to watch instantly. Please try another title” for EVERY TITLE). Any advice?

    1. Just wanted to add that I’ve tried to look at setting up smart VPN but I can’t find any instructions for an Apple TV which is the device I’m using.

try change your reign to USA-BETA and set your primary and secondary DNS to 185.37.37.37 . I did that and it worked.

  37. Well, if it worked then, it doesn’t work anymore. .. Very frustrating that Netflix makes us pay for shows we don’t want, and that those we do want aren’t available in our country.

    1. We should not blame Netflix for this, if they (Netflix staff) did wanted to block VPN users they would have done it long ago. Its the royalties companies (such as AMC, Fox, Warner…) that are putting pressure on Netflix to take measures on VPN users due to the contracts they have. Basically if Netflix were to operate equally on all countries (no region blocking) they would have to pay a lot more for their collection.

Dear Guilherme….mmmm not agree with you.
I don´t know how many people see netflix at Mexico, but they are a huge number.
Is this number not enough to pay the contracts or royalties companies ?

First class for usa and second class for the rest of the world ? I don´t believe it

One of the answers is local broadcast and local brands (they makes ads) are losting audience and a lot of money !!!.

There are internacional agreements between broadcast companies about blocking the signals

Soon, you will see piracy on all kind of these services……these agreements will do the next industry @ internet

      2. Netfix said i was using a proxy when their own log said I was in to places at the same time. Idiotic. They blocked me from watching anywhere. Then they thought I was going to pay for their service.

    2. exactly, I want to see old shows, most of the new stuff I don’t give a shit about. with VPN you could watch these old series, but if they keep blocking it they can shuff their ‘service’, well, you know where.?
