How to Install a VPN on Apple TV
Before you get your hopes up, Apple TV is a streaming platform that’s not compatible with VPNs. But don’t worry, have I failed you so far? Here’s what you need to do:
- Getting a VPN connection on your Apple TV is not an impossible task. You can either install a VPN on your router and spread a VPN connection all over the house or create a virtual router using your PC/Mac. These are the best ways to secure the device and bypass regional restrictions at the same time.
- Another way to access restricted channels on Apple TV is to invest in a provider that allows Smart DNS configuration. Technically, most of the VPNs on our list offer this feature and it’s easily set up. Just follow the setup guides provided on their official websites, after signing up, of course, and you’re good to go. Just configure the DNS on Apple TV and you’ll have a whole new library of channels to tap into. If you want good services, try out one of these best Smart DNS services.
Best VPN for Apple TV – Detailed Review
Here’s everything you need to know about the top providers available out there to unblock geo-blocked channels on your Apple TV.
ExpressVPN – Best Apple TV VPN 2020
Like no other, ExpressVPN has been outranking any VPN in the industry. It’s been around for quite some time now. Therefore, it knows how to satisfy a customer’s needs.
This robust VPN provider boasts a network that consists of thousands of servers around the world, particularly 160 locations in 94 countries.
If you want to unblock restricted content, ExpressVPN is your tool. Apple TV comes with dozens of streaming apps from all over the world.
The good thing is that ExpressVPN can unblock almost every one of them, including the American version of Netflix, Hulu, and so many more.
Speeds are essential, and ExpressVPN delivers excellent ones. When we tried their servers, we only witnessed a 7% drop in our connection, which is still perfect for HD and UHD streaming.
Furthermore, if you’re not willing to install ExpressVPN on your router, you can always use their MediaStreamer Smart DNS feature.
We tried that, configured it on our Apple TV, and the results were great. It unblocks hundreds of channels without any issue.
Moreover, ExpressVPN allows 5 simultaneous connections per account and offers a 30-day refund policy if you’re not satisfied with their service.

BulletVPN – Great VPN for Apple TV
BulletVPN was established back in 2017. Before we got to use it, we read so much about it, which lead us to try it out.
We performed several tests to check the quality of the service and the results were quite interesting.
Their server network is well-spread across key countries around the world. To be exact, BulletVPN has around 100+ server locations in 51+ countries.
Therefore, you’ll be able to get as many channels as you want on your Apple TV platform.
Speaking of channels, we always check the unblocking capability of a VPN as we assess it, and BulletVPN delivered, unblocking all major streaming services.
Streaming on Apple TV requires speed, and BulletVPN offers that. Hence, the Bullet in the name. A nearby server caused a 6% drop in our connection, which is pretty fast compared to the encryption applied.
It doesn’t matter if it’s the VPN service or its Smart DNS feature, the channels are accessible no matter where you are with minimal speed loss.
BulletVPN can be manually installed on your router and you’ll be able to use your account on six different devices simultaneously.
Finally, the service offers a 30-day refund policy in case you change your mind. However, Android users get a 24-hour free trial if they sign up through the app.

Also, you can establish a VPN connection on your router to ensure that every device at home is well protected with Surfshark’s military-grade encryption.
Finally, Surfshark allows you to test their service out as it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you’re not satisfied, you can ask for a full refund in the first 30 days of purchase.

Unlocator
Unlocator started the service back in 2013, offering Smart DNS only. However, in 2019, the provider launched its VPN service and we rushed to review it.
Unlocator is still small compared to the other services on our list, providing servers in 40+ countries. But you’ll find servers in countries where top streaming services are available.
Unlocator managed to unblock the American version of Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Hotstar, and dozens of other streaming services.
Their speed wasn’t that good on some servers but was steady on others. We were able to stream content in HD while testing it.
Also, their Smart DNS service can easily be configured on Apple TV by following the guides on their website. It supports more than 230 channels worldwide.
The service doesn’t have a dedicated application for routers. However, you can set up a connection manually. There are also guides for that on their website.
Among all the VPNs on our list, Unlocator is the only provider with a 7-day free trial. You’re not required to submit any of your credit card info, just your email address.
Once that’s done, you can also benefit from their 30-day refund policy as an added bonus.

NordVPN – Top VPN for Apple TV 2020
Statistically speaking, NordVPN has the largest server network among every provider we came across in the past few years.
NordVPN has more than 5000 servers across 62 countries. That’s quite overwhelming, yet outstanding for streaming content on Apple TV.
NordVPN was able to unblock each and every channel we used it for, including ones with the strongest VPN blocks such as Hulu and Netflix.
Speeds for streaming are not bad, yet not that good as well. Some servers showed some good results, while others, especially the ones with Double VPN showed very low rates.
If that’s an issue, you don’t have to install NordVPN on your router. You can use their SmartPlay Smart DNS feature to stream content on Apple TV with minimal speed loss.
NordVPN used to have a free trial, but users took advantage of that, creating several accounts to benefit from it. Now, they only offer a 30-day money-back guarantee if you wish to test their service before subscribing.

- 5000+ servers 60+ countries.
- 256-bit AES encryption.

I am using ExpressVPN. It works perfectly for FireTV. However, when it comes to AppleTV, many streaming services do not work, including EPIX, SPECTRUM, Xfinity, etc. Any clue?
That’s strange indeed. Did you try contacting ExpressVPN about the issue?
I get your VPN bypass details but the problem that exists with Apple TV is more to do with as to how do customers overcome the payment option when trying to register for Apple TV services like Showtime. HBOGo etc….the overseas credit card doesnt work and so you cannot stream these services with or without a VPN service!
