Please turn off any of these services and try again.” There are two workarounds for the Netflix proxy error. You can simply stop using VPN/Smart DNS and watch your local Netflix region. On the other hand, you can subscribe to a VPN that still allows you to change Netflix regions.
How Does Netflix Detect I am using VPN?
In essence, Netflix simply blacklists IP addresses that belong to VPN servers. When you connect to a blacklisted VPN server while trying to watch a movie or TV show on Netflix USA, you will be presented with a proxy error message. This is mainly because you appear to be browsing the web using the IP address that Netflix has already blacklisted.
With that being said, there are actually still some VPN providers that allow you to watch American Netflix abroad. Take a look at the list below.

How to Fix Netflix Proxy Error with VPN
First of all, if your VPN or Smart DNS proxy service provider has stopped supporting Netflix, the only thing you can do is sign up with a VPN that still works with Netflix. Check the list of working VPNs below. I constantly test these VPNs to verify they are still working. In case any of them do not work with Netflix any longer, I will remove them from the list. In some cases, some American VPN servers work while others don’t. Try connecting to a different US server if you get the Netflix proxy error, or contact your VPN’s support to get info on which servers are still working.
Follow these steps to fix the Netflix proxy error.
- Sign up with a VPN provider.
- Download and install the VPN application on your PC, Mac, Android, iOS device.
- Launch the VPN application and sign in using your VPN account.
- Now, connect to an American VPN server.
- Finally, go to the Netflix website or launch the Netflix application.
- You have successfully bypassed the Netflix proxy error and can now access American Netflix again.

We are successfully using ExpressVPN with our Fire Stick and unblocking American netflix. However, last night we got the proxy error message stating Netflix noticed we were using a proxy server. We switched from Dallas to Miami and then back to Dallas again…without any luck. Then we disabled the VPN and the series ran. Not sure what happened, perhaps the show was able to run in Mexico without a proxy??

Hey, what VPN do you use? It looks like Netflix knows that you’re trying to cheat. I don’t know, I use NordVPN, and it works pretty decently with Netflix. I think you should contact your provider’s customer support, maybe they could tell you which servers are newer and could work better. Good luck.
Using ExpressVPN and it often gets the “unblocker” message with NetFlix.
Occasionally restarting the VPN helps (I assume if you get an address in a range that hasn’t been blocked yet, but this often takes many tries). Express VPN need to up their game if they want to keep claiming it works with US Netflix.

March 29 2017. Has anyone noticed that SKY+ Catch Up now seems to be blocking some VPN servers. In the past SKY didn’t seem bothered, unlike BBC iPlayer or Netflix for example, but now they seem to be taking action. Has anyone else been affected by this? active.
Yeah, we have had many reports by users from various VPN providers, from the VPN providers we audit, ExpressVPN got it back to work after a couple of days. If you know of other providers that work with Sky please let us now.
The VPN provider we were using found all their servers throughout the UK blocked. I did find one that was still OK, but how long that will last is a big question. My advise to anyone is don’t take a long contract with a VPN provider, once SKY has found their IP address they will be blocked. I am just taking a month at a time until this settles. Someone has to come up with a better solution to beating the blocking, floating IP addresses?

Hi AJ. In some cases, connecting to a specific American VPN server does result in a proxy error message when trying to watch Netflix USA. I suggest either you try to connect to a different US VPN server, or get in touch with ExpressVPN support. Let me know how it goes.
i just purchased express vpn, to connect to the USA netflix, followed all the instructions, and it returns me the same error. I am unable to connect to the service. I guess since Feb 6th to now, it stopped working.

It might come as a surprise to the editor, but many people are NOT interested in the US Netflix. For many (most?) it is more useful for language or family reasons to watch different European local Netflix country-versions. So far NONE of the recommended VPN-providers are then useful for bypassing the proxy-blockage. Or am I wrong? Could be worth to point out that when reviewing VPN-site.

Thank you, Isso for the awesome article, but before I start my reply regards the Netflix Proxy Error. I want to shade the light at my personal experience regard SmartDNS. First of all, I have a year membership with Unlocator. Before I settled with them, I have tried 4 SmartDNS providers, one of them is Unlocator. The reason I decided to go with them is due to the fast charge speed connection; I set their SmartDNS in my 4K smart TV; and as soon as you click a 4K TV show, it takes 30 seconds to stream 4k content in its full glory. Other SmartDNS providers have not had that speed and performance. But unfortunately, even Unlocator still struggle with NetFlix, They have tried many ways, they even posted a beta DNS number which worked for few days and got busted as well. My membership will expire in three months, and it has been un-positively to attempt trying to login Netflix with the proxy error. The Rest work fine with Unlocator Amazon TV, Hulu, and others channels all work fine.

Cher, I am in Thailand and regularly access USA netflix with expressVPN on smart TV’s, macbook, android, windows, etc. I use L2TP and openVPN configured in an Asus router and connect to specific VPN servers.. No problems. You MUST connect to these servers ONLY though or Netflix will be blocked.
No problem with EXPRESS VPN, just keep trying with the different locations they offer for USA, until you get it.

I am using NordVPN on my PC and still able to access Netflix and until now they seems to be working. They have a feature called “SmartPlay”, when it’s enabled, I can access Netflix regardless the server I use.

The Netflix app on my Apple Tv (4th gen) doesn’t even load anymore with my VPN. Hulu works just fine, but if I have the vpn dns settings, Netflix doesn’t let me log in, citing an issue and to try again later. It doesn’t even let me get to main page and actually play something and get the usual “you’re using a proxy or unblocker” message. I’ve tried deleting and re-downloading the app, and the same thing keeps happening. If I switch to my usual/correct DNS settings it works perfectly. What do you think is the problem?

I have been using unblock for numerous years. I am from Canada and use it for netflix hulu and amazon. We know it will no longer work for netflix but netflix will not even let me watch from my own country if I don’t shut it off. I don’t want to lose the other services. Is there anyway I can not use it for netflix but for Hulu.
Cannot comment on Unblock-Us, as I have not tried them in a while, but Unlocator definitely allows you to access your local Netflix region without losing the ability to unblock other streaming channels including Hulu, Amazon, and HBO Go.

I don’t get the error you mention here, but… I’m in Spain, I use Hotspot Shield Elite, and although I choose USA as my VPN I keep getting logged into Germany Netflix. If I choose any other country as my VPN I do get to log to the corresponding Netflix region. But for the USA, which is the one I am really most interested in, I don’t seem to find any workaround. Any suggestions?

I’m having the exact same problem as Cathy… I am getting the message when I try to play a show in Netflix. I too used to use unblockus.com but haven’t since March 2016 when I learned that Netflix would no longer allow that option. I have cancelled my subscription to unblockus, however I’m paid up until Feb. 2017.
I’m in Canada and have had NO problem watching Netflix until 2 days ago (and I watch almost daily). Since then, I keep getting this streaming error message that you’ve shown above.
I have not done anything different than normal. Simply turn on my Samsung Smart TV, select Netflix, and push play… same as always, but now with this message.
I’m only assuming it’s connected to unblockus. My assumption is that it has my region marked as “Canada” but it’s using the proxy to state that, versus turning it off. I tried calling them, 1-602-515-0930, and after being placed on hold as soon as the call was answered, for 5 minutes, a recording came on asking to leave a message, and then said there is no room to leave a message and then disconnected.
I called Netflix 1-877-742-1335 – they were extremely pleasant to speak with. The guy I spoke to saw the same error when he accessed my account and said it’s not on their end, but through our internet provider.
I called our Internet provider and he said that the error is browser based, not anything on their end. He tested his own Netflix account and had no problem.
Which leads me back to my own terminal.
I’ve tried on my Smart TV, iPad, and Macbook Air. No luck on any device.
I don’t want a unblocker or proxy – I want it OFF so I can go back to watching my shows as normal. How do I turn it off??

Hi Tracie. The only logical explanation to the issue you are facing is that you either have Unblock-Us DNS server addresses setup on your streaming device or directly on your router. Try setting up Google DNS server addresses on your Mac or Smart TV and see if that resolves the issue. Google’s primary DNS is 8.8.8.8 and the secondary DNS is 8.8.4.4.

I’m in Canada and we use unblock us as well, and our Netflix came up with the proxy error around the same time as your post. We ended up just cancelling Netflix. We had our region set to Canada, and live in Canada, but it was just the fact that our DNS was set up period, that Netflix wouldn’t work. We had previously had a problem with the proxy and used the Google solution that was suggested to you, but that no longer works as well. We just cancelled our netflix and basically just watch hulu now. I don’t want to lose my hulu and pandora so that I can watch Netflix, that trade wasn’t worth it to me, so I figured the best option is to cancel netflix, the only way to send the message that they need to stop blocking proxies is to make sure they lose money for doing it.

This statement is a lie, I live in the US and access only the US servers and Netflix blocks me on both PIA and NordVPN. So they are blocking anyone and everyone on a VPN.
It’s because you still are going through the unblocking service. You need to turn it off completely. If you are using a DNS service then change the DNS to 8.8.8.8 for primary and 8.8.4.4 for secondary. Where you change that depends on if you set it in you router or specific device when you first set up your unblocking service. If VPN then check you VPN service for instructions on turning it off.

I reference Moreflicks and found that certain titles that should be available I n the US are not showing up in my US Netflix selection. Maybe it’s an error on the Moreflicks site but because my selection is kinda lame I feel there might be a chance I’m not getting all the US content. Any experience with this? I’m using Apple TV 3rd gen.
Hi Bry. That is a bit strange. Try searching for a series called ‘Star Crossed’. If you are able to find it and stream it on your Apple TV, it certainly means you are in the US Netflix region given that Star Crossed is not available elsewhere.
Hi Isso, I was able to stream it. Thanks for your help. For some reason it just seems like the proposed movies and tv shows seem outdated and the content seemed limited.

Hi, I’ve recently swapped to Optus Cable with a CG3000v2 Cable Modem. I’m trying to run Unlocator to access Netflix US and i’m still receiving the proxy error. It seems that Optus have clamped down on the modem they are providing so that you can’t manually enter DNS addresses on the router or block IP’s as per the Unlocator support page. Have you come across a work around for this kind of situation? I’m thinking that i might have to get another router and run the Optus Cable modem in bridge mode to be able to set DNS addresses and block IP’s.
Hello Tony. What you can do in such case is connect a secondary router that supports changing DNS and setting up static routes to your main router and then make all necessary changes on that secondary router instead. Here’s how it’s done:
1. Connect the secondary router’s WAN port to the main router’s LAN port using an Ethernet cable.
2. Configure Unlocator DNS on the secondary router.
3. Setup the necessary static routes on the secondary router.
4. Connect your streaming devices to the secondary router to watch American Netflix.

That’s strange Joseph. I’ve tested Unlocator as well as ExpressVPN just this morning and they both are still working for me.
I have trouble now with unlocator. Will play for a bit than proxy error msg. Switched to beta region and still the same problem. I think Netflix is winning this battle at the moment.

So I think I may have found my problem. I’m in the US and I would like to see Netflix from other countries. Does Unlocator work to do this or does it just work if you are in another country and wish to see American Netflix? That is what I’m getting from your article. I may be wrong…

Hi Steven. You should be able to watch UK Netflix using Unlocator.
I got Unblock-Us to work with Netflix (using new dns servers provided thru customer support) with this only bug: Everytime, before you access Netflix, update the region of your choice, if not, you’ll have the proxy message. Proved to work as a charm ’til this afternoon

I’m asking as I’ve got a UK Netflix account which worked fine with ExpressVPN (in any country) until somewhere in January. Since then I’m just getting the proxy error (as per your article’s image). Do you use some specific settings on ExpressVPN to make it work for you?
Hi it should not matter if you have a US or UK Netflix account. I’d recommend contacting ExpressVPN support. They should be able to help you out.

Hi Adam. You can use either VPN or Smart DNS to unblock NBC Sports Live in England. However, even when using either solution, you still need an American cable subscription to sign into NBC Sports.

Since yesterday no way of using Netflix with unlocator. Every time i tried to watch something I have the proxy error message. On unolcator it s written that they know about it and they are trying to fix but stiLl not working, so frustrated….

Just wanted to add that I’ve tried to look at setting up smart VPN but I can’t find any instructions for an Apple TV which is the device I’m using.
Smart VPN cannot be setup on Apple TV I am afraid.

try change your reign to USA-BETA and set your primary and secondary DNS to 185.37.37.37 . I did that and it worked.

We should not blame Netflix for this, if they (Netflix staff) did wanted to block VPN users they would have done it long ago. Its the royalties companies (such as AMC, Fox, Warner…) that are putting pressure on Netflix to take measures on VPN users due to the contracts they have. Basically if Netflix were to operate equally on all countries (no region blocking) they would have to pay a lot more for their collection.
