Is Smart DNS Proxy Legal and Safe?

Is Smart DNS proxy legal and safe to use in USA, UK, Australia, Canada, or Germany? The rise of online streaming services has led to a higher demand for tools to bypass geographic restrictions. This is mainly because these VOD channels are geoblocked in certain regions. Smart DNS, along with VPN, is the most popular method to unblock geoblocked content like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, or HBO Go. But, how legal are Smart DNS proxies in USA, UK, Canada, Australia, or Germany? And more importantly, is Smart DNS proxy safe?

Is Smart DNS Proxy Safe?

Before I answer this question, you should know that there are two kinds of proxies. You have reputable Smart DNS proxy services like Unlocator, Unblock-Us, and Unotelly on one hand, and free proxies you find online on the other.

Unlocator, for example, have clear privacy policies and ToS. They have a physical address and full contact details. Using their DNS codes is completely safe and does not compromise your device’s security.

However, free DNS codes you find online are simply dangerous. For starters, you don’t really know the source of these DNS server addresses. The fact they are free raises eyebrows itself. Here are some things to consider before you use free DNS codes.

  1. Your privacy is exposed.
  2. You are wasting your time. Most of these free DNS codes are outdated and simply don’t work.
  3. Given that you do not know who operates and owns that DNS code, you are at risk of your personal information such as Facebook information, Bank accounts, email accounts, being stolen.
  4. Customer support is non-existence. If you run into issues or lose Internet connectivity, you are own your own.

Is Smart DNS Proxy Legal?

In short, Smart DNS proxy is legal. There is nothing illegal about changing your DNS server addresses. In fact, Google themselves offer their own DNS server addresses which are free to use. What you should know is that criminal online activities are illegal with and without Smart DNS.

Some ISPs in countries such as India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, China, Indonesia, and Thailand, do however try to hinder the use of Smart DNS by the way of transparent proxies.

DNS hijacking is another method some ISPs use to prevent DNS server address change. In this case, you still pass through your ISP’s DNS server addresses even though you have configured Smart DNS on your device/router.

Best Smart DNS Proxy Service in 2017

I have been using Unlocator for quite a while now. I have never run into any legal issues although I have used their DNS server addresses in several countries. In terms of security, Unlocator DNS is completely free of malware and viruses.

You can use Unlocator to unblock over 220 geo-restricted channels from around the world. Their videos, screenshots, and DNS setup guides are easy to follow as well. You can sign up for a free 7-day trial without the need for a credit card.

Unblock-Us is another Smart DNS proxy service you might consider. While I have only used them sporadically, they do have a large user base and are one of the most reputable Smart DNS providers around. They also offer a free trial.

VPN: A Safer Smart DNS Alternatives

While proper Smart DNS proxy services are completely safe, you can add an extra layer of online security and privacy by using VPN instead. Virtual private networks encrypt your Internet traffic and hide your IP address. Smart DNS proxy service provide neither feature unfortunately.

I decided to purchase a subscription in Smart DNS Proxy after reading their advertisement.

The purchase transaction was quite fast and on the same day I could start configuring my company’s notebook to unlock video, music and other services available in my country only.
To my disappointment, the configuration was unsuccessful. It turned out that despite the information about having a server in Poland, the company does not have that.

According to the general terms and 30 days money back guarantee, I decided to cancel my subscription.
It’s been over a month since my cancellation but I have not received any refund. I am not able to count responses from Smart DNS Proxy that money shall be at my account any time just to be patient. It is really pathetic.

I would like to warn other users who are considering purchasing a DNS or VPN service – do not use Smart DNS Proxy services.

    Regards.

Today, on 02.01.2018, I received my refund from Smart DNS Proxy. I am not sure either this is a response to my yesterday comments or refund process takes so long.
