Hello everyone,
someone was trying to connect to a home VPN server created with pivpn.io for Raspberry PI HW?
Among other things, I have a Private Internet PIA and when I import a .file, it works perfectly, but if I use my own ovpn. file, so my authentication fails. I would see the problem in the fact that it is always necessary to enter the name and password in the client here. And when using pivpn.io, only the password is entered. That’s why the whole process fails for me :-(
Thank you for your help.
Those having issue with expressvpn the password for kodi and VPN manager is different than the one you use to login to the site and when you use the vpn software in windows for example. I had the same AUTH issue and when I used the password expressvpn gives for kodi it worked.
Go to this page https://www.expressvpn.com/setup#manual and use the username and password provided there
Did anybody get Express VPN to work with Zomboided VPN Manager? It is asking for a OVPN file, but when I provide the one from Express VPN (see Open VPN setup), it fails with AUTH FAILED. Any suggestions? Thank you!
-keepalive conflict with -ping -ping-exit or -ping-restart.If you use -keepaliveyou don’t need anyother ping directive.
You need to edit your *.ovpn file before you import it and either delete the line :
keepalive 15 60
Or put a hash in front of it :
#keepalive 15 60
Then on a new line type the following which replaces the keep alive command :
ping 15
ping-exit 60
I also noticed that I had the line :
server-poll-timeout 60
If you also have this line just change the value to something a little larger, 90/120 etc.
Good luck
Thank you for your input. Hopefully this will help others as well.
Yeah, Surf Shark isn’t on the list While installing with Openelec.

Hi, just installed CyberGhost onto LibreElec 8.02. With CG switched off Kodi 17.3 is fully working. Switch on VPN on if I load – say Incursion and select: Movies/Rear/ 2017 (- say or any other) I get the Kodi ‘ searching wheel’ but no results returned. Same result if I select movies/genre/’anything’. Same result from other add-ones. CyberGhost are unable to advise me.
BTW, running on Celeron powered NUC

Hi,
I’m having problems getting my vpn working on my vu+ Solo 4k box. I have inputted files into the file system using filezilla (as per instructions found on the internet, supplied by my vpn sprovider). When I go into the menu system of the Vu+ Solo 4k box via the remote control:
Menu – Setup – Network – Services – OpenVPN and select ‘Start’ (Green Button), with Autostart selected (Yellow Button), the ‘Current Status’ changes from ‘Stopped’ ( white text on red background), to ‘Running’ ( white text on green background).
Unfortunately, when I exit OpenVPN, and re-enter OpenVPN, the ‘Current Status’ reverts back to Stopped’ ( white text on red background).
Whilst still in OpenVPN, if I select ‘Show Log’ (Blue Button), there is nothing to view, i.e. The log is blank.
My VPN supplier isn’t familiar with the Vu+ box, and I have therefore tried using the ‘Zomboided VPN Manager for OpenVPN’ addon in the kodi plugin running on the Vu+ box.
I entered the VPN Manager Settings , and filled in my VPN Provider, Username, and Password into the relevant fields. When I went into the VPN Connections tab, and selected ‘First connection (optionally used to auto connect during boot)’, I received a ‘VPN Manager for OpenVPN’ message on my tv screen stating “The OpenVPN executable isn’t working. Check the log, then from a command line prompt type’ocpenvpn’ and fix any problems reported”
When I go into the Debug tab and check the log file in the ‘View OpenVPN log file’, there is nothing in the log.
I am a complete novice at this, and would appreciate any help you could offer
Thanks very much in advance
With the error on connection of:
RE: ERROR: Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/net/tun: No such file or directory (errno=2), Exiting due to fatal error
You will need to create a device as root. ssh into your device and type the following and I was able to connect immediately.
mkdir /dev/net
mknod /dev/net/tun c 10 200
chmod 0666 /dev/net/tun
I followed the tutorial to install Zomboided on my raspberry pi 3 with Kodi Krypton and Dietpi OS (optimised form of Raspbian Jessie) and am trying to connect to VPN Unlimited but always get a message dialogue saying:
“Connecting to first VPN
Error connecting to VPN. Something unexpected happened.
Retry to check openvpn operation and then check log”
Having retried numberous times I checked the VPN Logfile, there is a lot of info but I can’t see an error message.
When Zomboided prompted me for the .crt & .key files I pointed the dialogue to .ovpn files sent to me by my vpn service provider.
Also I can connect to vpn provider via pivpn using
openvpn –config .ovpn

I followed the directions for kodi 17.1 on librelec but I cannot get the add on to actually install. When I select install from zip file and point it to the file nothing happens. Then I click on install from repository and the progress bar thing just spins and nothing happens.
Ran into an error locating servers saying this was not compatible with current platform while configuring OpenVPN. Any advice?
I got the same issue with Krypton 17.3!!! any suggestions to help this issue?
I’m using user defined settings I get “user authentication not used with user defined” during connection. I then get an error log that says tls -auth fails with ta.key : no such file or directory . But my ta.key file is in the same directory with the .opvn file and .crt.key files. Does this programe ignore the ta key?
Using AirVPN on Kodi 17.1, I get this error in the log after a successful Data Channel Encrypt entry….ERROR: Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/net/tun: No such file or directory (errno=2)
Exiting due to fatal error
To further clarify, I was using OpenElec, I downloaded LibreElec kodi version 17.1 and the addon works as specified. I manually imported my ovpn files, then it prompted for the password for my user key and then connected. It is working..yay!
I’m having the same problem and I have a libreelec in another room running vpnm fine but upstairs on the openelec I get the same error as you (above). Compared the ovpn files, certificates etc on both and they are identical right down to the file permissions. Others must have come across this issue.
Where did you get the key from mate

Hi thanks for the guide. I am using this with PIA VPN, it was working great on Kodi 16.1 but since I upgraded to 17 it will not connect to any server.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled and each time I try to connect it the connection attempt times out. The error showing in the logs is “ERROR: Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/net/tun”.
Can you help please?
When I try to add a second connection to the VPN Manager on Kodi Jarvis 17.1 with the VPN manager described on this page, the first connection never disconnects and as a consequence, I can only configure one Connection within the VPN Manager. If I select Disconnect manually from the VPN Manager, the connection still will NOT disconnect. My only option is to reboot my Raspberry Pi. I have the configuration set to NOT automatically connect to first VPN.
I’m using Kodi (Jarvis) through RetroPie and I updated the VPN Manager to version 4.0.1. Now when trying to validate VPN connections I get to choose from these options:
Switch between location and server times OR
Cancel connection attempt
Nothing happens when I choose to the first option. Any help? Thanks!
I am downloading this on a mac and nothing is zipped. I zip it… place it on a usb stick…. and try to install it (ras pi running librelec) and it will not install from zip. “Failed to install AddOn” Help!!!
I followed your instructions to a TV on my AndroidTV, but it will not connect to any VPN. I’m using NordVPN, when I go to the tab to select the first vpn connection, I press enter on the first option (only thing highlighted), and it kicks me back to the main menu for the OpenVPN add-on. It then shows a error message stating:
VPN Manager for OpenVPN
The OpenVPN executable isn’t writing out a log. Try changing the Kodi log directory setting in Settings-Debug menu and retry.
Unfortunately, the Zomboided Kodi VPN add-on is only meant to work on devices which are Linux or Windows-based. It won’t work on Android-based devices. Have you tried sideloading the NordVPN app on your AndroidTV?
Thank for your tutorial.
I install zomboided on my Rasp pi2 (Kodi 17) with user define vpn provider.
I can not connect to any Vpn.My log says: ” Option error.-keepalive conflict with -ping -ping-exit or -ping-restart.If you use -keepaliveyou don’t need anyother ping directive.”
Can you help me with that?
Thank
i downloaded zomboided repo on a USB stick and inserted it in my fire tv. When I tried to open the zip file on kodi, the romboided repo cannot be found on the USB but I can see the zip file when I plug it back to my MacBook. Does this mean that the file is not supported by kodi?
Unfortunately, the Zomboided VPN manager will not work on Fire TV. You can still install install a VPN app on your Amazon Fire TV using this guide https://thevpn.guru/install-fire-stick-vpn-tutorial though.
