Private IP Address vs Public IP Address – What’s the Difference?

A lot of people get confused between the two main types of IP addresses: a public and a private IP address. Your device’s private or internal IP address is the IP that your router or modem issues to that device. It mainly allows your device to communicate with your router and other devices you might have connected to that same router in your household.

Your public IP, however, is the IP address that your ISP (Internet service provider) issues to you. A public or external IP address is necessary for you to receive and send data to websites or apps. So, if you want to see whether a VPN is hiding your IP address, your public IP is what you should be checking.

How to Check Public IP Address on Kodi?

A couple of things should be done before you can check your IP address. Everything is presented in a comprehensive step by step walkthrough. Don’t worry.

Step.1 – Get Indigo Wizard

Let’s start off the Kodi IP address without connecting to a VPN server. You’ll have to install the Indigo Wizard as constructed below.

  1. Alright, let’s kick it off by activating the Kodi app.
  2. After that, head over to Settings. You’ll find the Gear Icon in the top left corner of your screen.
  3. Navigate to System Settings -> Expert Mode, and then Add-ons.
  4. You should enable “Unknown Sources”. Without that, third-party add-ons cannot be installed.
  5. Just like any other app or device, Kodi will warn you with a notification. Click Yes.
  6. Head back to Kodi’s Settings.
  7. Click on File Manager and go right to Add Source.
  8. Tap on None and submit this path: “”.
  9. Rename it to Fusion and hit OK.
  10. Back to our Home Screen, click on Add-ons.
  11. There’s a Package-like Icon on the top left of your screen. Click on that.
  12. Once there, you should select Install from Zip File.
  13. Choose the file you just named “Fusion” and click begin-here.
  14. Pick and hit install.
  15. A notification will pop-up informing you that Add-on has been enabled.
  16. Head back to Kodi’s Home Screen and click on My Add-ons.
  17. Finally, select Program Add-ons and launch Indigo from the list.

Best VPN Services for Kodi

To keep it simple, a VPN is an internet software that adds security and privacy to your internet activities. You have an ID, right? Everybody does. Well, your IP address is your internet ID and everyone can see it. The IP address retrieves information about your location and your ISP (internet service provider). With a VPN, you can hide it and browse anonymously.

Moreover, VPNs can spoof your location so that you can appear in different places with a push of a button. That comes in handy when you’re looking to unblock geo-restricted content. Let’s see what else a VPN can do:

  • Bypass Geo-restrictions: You might find that some Kodi add-ons are not available to install. That’s because most of them are region-specific, which means they operate in a certain country. With a VPN, you can connect to a server in any supported country and access exclusive content despite being abroad.
  • Connection Speed: Sometimes when you’re streaming a video, you witness sudden speed drops and your video starts to buffer a lot. That’s because your ISP is throttling your internet. However, when you connect to a VPN server, you can circumvent this issue with ease.
  • Internet Anonymity: You do know that there a lot of illegal add-ons on Kodi right? Imagine you get in trouble for trying one out? Yeah, your IP can be traced to your actual location. “I’m not encouraging illegal actions, but Kodi is meant to be enjoyed.” With a VPN, you can hide your IP address and browse anonymously. No one can know what you’re doing.

  1. Man, I’m so Grateful for this. Getting the idea of local and external IPs confused lead me to think NordVPN wasn’t encrypting my data and spend a depressing amount of time trying to fix that. I logged into Nord app which showed my new IP address, & double checked on whatsmyip sites using Silk Browser, and they showed my new IP as well. But I checked System Info from within Kodi and it only showed my orig IP address. I logged in and out of diff Nord servers, but it didn’t change the IP address shown (which I now to be because it’s my internal IP.) I don’t know why System Info within Kodi wouldn’t show Internal & External IPs for that reason. Anyway, this was informative and solved my problem. I logged in and out of Nord and it does change my external IP address. Thank you

Hey there. Your not the only one. The fact the external and internal IPs aren’t the same confuses a lot of people. Anyway, I’m glad you have figured it out.

  2. .

  3. Interesting.
Trying to go with IPVanish from your suggestions.

However, I may be missing something with the Kodi System Info information.

It shows a comcast IP address and both DNS are showing ipv6 feeds?

However when running a PIA router (disconnected for testing) it shows the PIA DNS servers.

For some reason…IPVanish and Kodi seem to not be working together.

Everything on the firestick while running IPVanish shows DNS leak tests to be where the VPN sends me….but within Kodi the DNS and IP addresses under the system tabs show something else.

VERY confused and any help would be appreciated.

  4. The URL “” for the Ares repo returns this error: “Unable to Connect – Couldn’t retrieve directory information. This could be due to the network not being connected. Would you like to add it anyway?”

  5. Hello,
I have a firestick with alexa remote. When I connect to IPVanish it shows the that I am connected to the VPN. However, when I check my IP address with IPLeak or the Ares Speed Test, my Verizon IP address shows, instead of the IPVanish IP.
So IPVanish is not working for me. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but that did not help.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

  6. Where will I see my IP when testing? The one shown on the popup is different to mine but it is the same isp. The system info tab contains my internal IP and correct gateway and DNA address. This happens with or without vpn working

  7. Hi Charles, I just wanted to start off by saying that I really Appreciate all you do with your helpful insite and Knowledge with this stuff.
So I install iVanished and signed up for a month. Install on my firestick, its connect to Another server With a different ip address.
But when I go into ares wizard internet test. It shows that I’m still connected to my Isp .
Is there something I’m Missing? How do I get it to integrate into my kodi app ?

  8. I get a better download speed without my ipvanish how does that work mmm I’m I paying for something I really don’t need .
